What can I do about this...

I’m nearing completion of a Monogram T-28D in VNAF livery. I did the decals a couple of months ago but haven’t sealed them yet. I discovered today that a decal is splitting. These are AOA decals. Should I re-wet the decal with some wetting solution? I have on hand Micro Sol and Solvaset. I feel that Micro Sol will help resettle the decal and then I can hit the decals with some Tamiya acrylic clear.

I think it is too late for Microset at this point.

I think you are looking at a 2 stage process. 1) get the decal to set back down, then 2) touch up (paint) the cracked part (sorry). Then clearcoat as usual.

I’d try Microsol (not Microset) first, only try Solvaset if that doesn’t work. In either case, don’t touch the decal or try to “push” the crack together.

Looking forward to reading other advice.

Thanks, Greg. I’m going to put a dab of Micro Sol on the decal and see what happens. I don’t want to have to buy another set of those decals for just one insignia. They are $19.00 per set.

Looks like the Micro Sol worked, Greg. I’ll shoot it with some Pledge in a short while. Before the decal has a chance to curl up again.

Frank - if the decal is properly “melted” then there’s nothing to crack anymore - because the carrier film is dissolved and fuses with the paint. If it’s cracking then it means there’s still a lot of carrier film there.

I understand people are kinda afrain of Solvaset because it is so strong. Well I guess my bottle must be pretty old or something, because Solvaset often barely does the job on some of the decals I was using in the last few years. In your case I probably wouldn’t be too afraid of hitting the spot with Solvaset.

Good thing is the colours you would need to touch up the spot in question are relatively easy to match.

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Pawel, thanks for your input though. I just sprayed the decals with Pledge and everything seems to be OK now.
