i mean, aside from people who are always complaining [;)] I get the impression they have something to do with the tracks. Is there a good glossary of AFV terms on the web somewhere, someplace where us newbies could go befoe we expose out ignorance for the whole world to see. thanx in advance for responding
A grouser is the raised ridge on the track that allows the tracks to ‘bite’ into the ground for traction.
I dont know of any afv glossary site. You might try a Google search.[:)]
Actually, that’s the cleat. The grousers are extenders that get added to the outer edge of the track. They help decrease ground pressure by widening the track. Then the tank doesn’t sink into the ground as much. M4 Sherman Jumbos had them permanently affixed.
Ice cleats are added to the center of the track, sometimes between the shoes, like the M3/5 Stuart light tanks. Sometimes like on modern German tanks, they replace track pads and are “X” shaped.
Have a look at these links Doswonk.[:)]

Charles: Great links! Thanks! I also did a Dogpile search and found this one: http://web.inter.nl.net/users/spoelstra/g104/track_vvss.htm Now i’ll be checking the next tracked construction vehicle to see what type of grousers it has.
