I used to live near London Heathrow and would occassionally drive the airport. There is a road that runs between the Concord hangers and the main runways, so it had a ‘plane crossing’, much like a railway level crossing with gates.
It was great you would be able to sit there and watch one of the big nosed birds being towed in or out, or just see several of them parked together in the hangers!

One of my coleague’s brothers towed Concord out for the final flight to Filton. And they pay him too!!!

I saw the one now in Seattle’s Museum of Flight as it flew by the city and again as it taxiied to it’s final destination. The crew set a new world record for travel between NYC and Seattle. Something like 3 1/2 hrs. It is now open for tours. I’ll have to get down there someday to check her out up close. But I have to testify…it was pretty surreal watching that sleak plane glide across the NW sky. A white dart in a field of blue.
Many moons ago a guy I worked with in the U.S. State Dept was on board a plane which was hijacked in the mid-East. Eventually, the hijackers made their way to Dhaka, Bangladesh (of all places!) where after several days, everyone was released. By that time the State Dept. knew Tom was on board and was most relieved when he was set free and made his way to the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka. They sent him a message and ordered him to report to Washington “… by the quickest possible means.” Later, he told me he saw the chance of a lifetime. He flew to New Delhi, from Dhaka, and then on to London via British Airways. There, he picked up the Concorde and was back in Washington in one quick hurry! When he submitted his travel voucher, State went berserk when they saw he had flown back on the SST and how much it had cost. They attempted to have pay for it until he pulled out the message which stated he was to get to Washington by the most expeditious means possible. He told them other than a SR-71 the SST was the fastest plane he knew of and you really couldn’t book reservations on the -71. I believe he was the only State communicator to have flown the Concorde and have the U.S. taxpayers pick up the tab!
