thanks guys, your words are very kind and ecouraging.
sharkskin, the weathering is done with the combined techniques of a dark umber wash, drybrushing, and slight panel shading using tamiya smoke, which is a great tool for weathering. as long as you coat the subject with future before you start any type of weathering, your gonna be fine friend!! jump off in there and weather up something bubba!! its fun. later.[;)]
Chris, a great build of a not so great kit [tup]. Very nice painting & weathering. But, some of the Classic Air Frames kits can be tough. It’s like they never tried to assemble the d[censored] things before they box em up & sell em. When this kit came out a couple of years ago, it was supposed to have corrected some of the problems with the earlier release. WRONG ! One point of interest, though. The kit comes with markings for the Dieppe Disaster as you built. But none of the references I have list the Whirlwind as having been involved. Can anyone confirm whether the Whirlwind was there or not ?
Thanks Filbert. I have other printed references & none show the Whirlwind deployed. But, I have to assume Classic had some refererence to justify the kit markings. Anyone else ?
Oh Lord, look what you’ve started now rick!!!LOL maybe they just had them on standby or something and they never got the nod. its too bad the Brits couldn’t find a suitable engine for this cool bird. i love those 4 cannons starin’ at you!! i seems it could do some extreme damage to tanks and such of the period. later.
Lovely job you’ve done there! Definitely worth the effort you put into it. I like the Whirlwind too. Yet another great aircraft soured by inadequate engines though!!!
I am very impressed that you had the patience to finish that terrible kit. I have that same kit on the bench every few weeks always willing to finish it now, but seems it will never come together completely. Its the worst kit I ever started. Probably the last Classic Airframes my work bench will see. Anyway, you did a great job and I am thinking about sending you mine to finish it and then send it back?
I would like to have a good one like yours in the cabinet.
Gerald
Those cannons are menacing to say the least. what can I say Chris…you never fail to impress me my friend. The weathering is subtle and adds wonderfully to the overall effect, the paint is awesome, everything is perfect. I’d love to see cockpit photos assuming you took some before inserting it. That wasn’t a bird I knew about before as I mostly know US and Japanese planes. It’s a badass looking bird and you did a great job. Keep posting the good stuff!!
Gerald Man, where have you been?!! i’ve seen your work and it is impressive to say the least!! i know you have the ability to make this kit shine like a new penny, so don’t even think about sending it my way!! be sure to post some pics over here when you’re done please!! thanks for your kind words.
josh LOL, i’m not gonna get too close to that cockpit friend, she’s all boogered up!! i couldn’t for the life of me get that thing in there properly, so i finally gave up on it and trudged along! thanks for the compliments friend. later.
thank you for your words. Maybe I will finish it someday. But to give all the other folks an impression what really hard work it is -and what really good job you did- I´d like to show a few pics of my Whirlwind. As everyone can see, the cockpit is quite nice, and it would fit into the fuselage if there weren´t all the other challenges. You can see the big gaps on the nose and on the belly. Hope you like it .
Gerald
Gerald not too shabby friend!! like i say, i spent hours detailing that wonderful cockpit and i’ll have to admit, i was fond of my efforts, only to loose the battle of placement in the fuselage!! i tried doing it by glueing the side walls in first, which has worked well for me on other kits in the past, maybe assembleing it together as you have it in the photo is the way to go. have you tried the wing to fuselage fit yet?!![:O] its terrible!! also, the engine to wing fit needs alot of sanding to get them in place, then filling to keep the nice, round curve going. it seems that you are doing well so far, keep it up, i’d love to see the finished product. is your fuselage warped? later.
Salty,
My cockpit WOULD fit in BUT the wing to fuselage fit is a horror. So put that thing away in the box but will get it out soon as I have seen yous now. It must be possible to finish… My fuselage isn´t warped neither are the other parts. But I the overall fit is completely bad. I will have to finish mu Ju88 and then my Tamiya UHU first and then maybe…
Now I go on vacation to Elba so will see no kit for 14 days. What a shame.
LOL, have a safe trip friend!! you do excellent work, i remember the stang that you assembled last year, it has stuck in my memory every since, the “Nooky Booky” scheme…excellent looking build. and the F-18 with the yellow landing gear…very nice!! they impressed me so, then you disappeared for a long time. i always look forward to your builds friend. don’t be shy!! oh, i also seen a sneak preview of your Ju88 in swanny’s post. nice work.
my fuselage was warped!! bad, it was in the shape of a bananna!! anyway, i’ll be looking forward to some finished pics of you builds. later.
How did you un-warp the fuselage? I’ve not had a kit with a seriously warped one, but I’d like to know the fix ahead of time in case I get one eventually.
josh, i did it the dumb way probably, but i use Tenax7 for most styrene to styrene jobs, and one side was fairly straight, while the mating side was way out of wack!! i just glued them together very slowly, and had to force it in a couple of places and just grit my teeth and hold it for about 30 seconds. its still crooked a bit, but not too terribly noticeable. if i shot a photo right down the center, you could see it. i’ve heard you can run warm to hot water over a warped piece and work it back semi straight, but i’ve never tried it. later.
