Could anyone out there tell me if I could use a very thin bead of Squadron putty on my Panzer IV to simulate weld beads.
Yes, you can. Make sure you mask off the surrounding areas, leving a very thin line, and putty in a thin layer, then, very quickly, shape the welds with a hobby knife. Make sure you do very small areas at a time, otherwise parts of the putty wil chunk up and be hard to manipulate.

No problem. If the putty does dry up on you, you can apply a small amount of super glue to soften it up.
I use thick tube paint, I use a toothpick or pin to apply it. If you don’t like the results, you can scrape it off with your nail when its dry and try again.
