So I used to be a member here probably back in like 2003-05 ish? I actually sold 90% of my saved kits, supplies, books all of it. I just never had the time or the work space. Every time I would get set up we would have to move for my job, or for a nicer place to live. Eventually I just gave up. But, being the true dedicated modelers we are, I saved a handful of my favorite kits to give the boy and he (by accident) found them recently and has requested I build him something to display in his room. Hes only 5 and obsessed with Nissans.
Quick Background: I was a Manager at a HobbyTownUSA in Fremont, Ca. Ive been into model kits since I was 8 but as a kid I just built them out of the box with random paint mom could afford here and there. My very first kit was the Revell 1/12 Camaro from the early 80’s. I pulled it out of the trash after my father had given up after several attempts at a custom paint job. It wasnt until I was much older that I tried to make something nice. Usually gifts for friends. I actually gave up the hobby because woodworking was easier to do with the little ones, since I can for the most part start and stop that work anytime without any major cleanup.
Not sure this latest adventure is going to suck me back in the hobby, but shit… Im posting on here… having to repurchase some materials and tools. So who the heck knows… I have like 2 or 3 not completed models I should finish…
Welcome back to the hobby and to this forum James! You’ll find a wealth of knowledge and assistance on this site. I’d suggest joining a local model club if there is one in your area, though they may be meeting via Zoom right now. Check out the videos on You tube, there are a ton of sites depending on the are of modeling that you’re interested in. Finally, try out the various modeling podcasts on the streaming services. They offer tons of tips and are great to listen to while driving in the car or working at the workbench. Take care and stay safe.
Welcome back. I was busy with other hobbies 1:1 cars, RC… and sold off most of my stash as well. That lasted about 4 years when I pulled a kit off the shelf and started building again. Here we are 7 years or so later and my stash somehow replenished itself…lol
510 fan? I had a '71 back in college and really wish I would have held onto it. They make the coolest little track cars.
Thanks! Yea got a lot of those (interesting stories) glad to be back and thanks for the welcome!
I gave up the hobby, but never the interest. I still watch youtube videos, follow other builders on Instagram all that. Still, the tips are appreciated!
Yes, unfortunately I too sold my 71 many years ago. I purchased it with the hopes of turning it into a track only or time attack car. But life had other plans. Living in the Bay Area is not easy and I was in and out of Apartments. I couldn’t afford the money to store it, and had no idea how long it would have been stored for. Had no family to ask to keep it so I had to let her go. That was 2009. Now its 2021, and had covid not happened wed have already purchased a house out of Ca and Id be looking for another one. For fun, here are a few photos
The day I brought her home:
The last Day I drover her before the tear down, and probably my most fun day of Car ownership ever.
And where I stopped the project when I had to move for work and had nowhere to put her.
Welcome back to the hobby and to the Forums! Glad to have you aboard.
I started building models in 1946 (6 years old) and never stopped along with a lot of other hobbies. Used to race at Atco Dragway back in the 60’s for a few years until I finally realized I couldn’t continue to race the car that I had to use to get back and forth to work with. Favorites are WWI & WWII planes followed by sailing ships.
Thats an awesome story Jim, thanks for sharing. Waay back I thought about venturing into planes and tanks but never did. Im obsessed with WWII history and love the machines from that period. I held onto some tank diecast, but pretty sure I let all the Dragon kits go. Shouldnt have.
Glad I held onto this old thing. Took a while to dig it out of storage haha. It takes up quite a bit of space on my work bench so Ive moved stuff around so it will go underneath when not in use.
We also took a trip to our LHS to pick up some paint. It was my sons very first trip to one. He was a bit overwhelmed to say the least. Hes a HUGE fan of steam trains and the Polar Express so we spent 45 mniutes just drooling over the cool HO and N scale stuff. Hopefully we can build a decent sized N scale table in the future but thats a whole other forum haha. We bought his very first model kit. A snap tite fire engine. He helped me build it, and then proceeded to break it about 20 minutes after which is pretty much how its supposed to go am I right?
Welcome back. Welcome to the forums. There is alot if great info here . There are some great people here with lots of experiancein all areas and are willing to share it with anyone that asks. They even have a great sense of humor which I think is great. Again welcome .
Yea it is massive. It was a bit of an impulse buy many many years ago. I have not priced them out recently, are they expensive? Serves me well, until I need to move it around haha! I also found some more fun toys this morning! Im a bit shocked how much dust can build up even being inside a box haha. Guess I should really redesign the garage for my dust collectyion thats just sitting in boxes.
All of these conversational posts would go better in the different sections,I think you find that you get more engagement in the specific areas, more people can enjoy those posts
Oh Good heavens! You had one of those too! I literally drove the wheels of mine driving from Texas to California and back, Plus, Finally wore it out in Bethel Island Ca. When the engine let go. I was on a salvage job and had just left Concord,Ca. Was building models all through it and during my time Asea with BP/Shell. Glad to have you back!
