Got the paint for the Mini build today. Going to do an homage to the Silk Cut Jaguars of the 1990’s. White body with purple roof and fender flares. Still need to clean the garage.
And now 12 hours in and I don’t have too much to show yet. I have used more filler on this truck kit then I have on my past dozen 48 scale jets. I think this was a standard F-150 kit and they added parts to make the Lightning so the add on parts are kind of half-assed. Even the instructions show the wrong parts at times. However things will go a little faster now that I got most of the warp out of the chassis and the body kit sort of fitting. I will post a little later in the day when I get some paint on things.
Okay, 18 hours in so far and my bench looks like a bomb went off. But I am making progress of sorts. Chassis is more or less together. Some of the warp is still there so if she sits on “all fours” I will be impressed. I tried to shim the rear axle but time will tell. Have a base coat on the chassis, bed liner and window trim in Semi gloss black. A grey base on the interior with a second grey to follow. Got some of the metal work on the engine and rims down too. Need to wait a bit for some things to dry before I proceed much further. I should get at least one more progress report in tonite.
Caveman- “… so far and my bench looks like a bomb went off.”
For this one, I’m not even at the bench. I’ve encroached into the family shared zone using chairs for tables and stuff on the floor.
I’d like to take this opportunity to give props to Mrs. Sprueone’s patients, support, and understanding. This 48hr build would not be otherwise possible.
DasBeav, Thanks for checkin in. I dig those little kits too. I’ve also purchased a few and this is the first one that I’m building.
Haha yeah, cool. The frame is from a thrift store. Easy to make.
I’ve never seen a toon tank before. It’ll be fun to watch it come together. if
My build started this evening at 2038. For inspiration, the original Italian Job is playing in the DVD. Unfortunately, I still can’t post pics from my phone, so I’ll have to go to the library tomorrow and post there. Keep up the good work!
Sprue - that Somua toon tank is going to look pretty cool all built up! Keep at it!
Caveman - really nice work so far! Luv the metal paint job on those parts! BTW, I noticed the shot glass on the bench…not drinking that lacquer thinner straight are we?!?[:P]
A bit of an update on the Mini build. When I went to bed about 8 hours into the build, I had completed the following: the chassis plate was primed and painted, I removed the visible mold seams on the exterior and primed it and masked it so the interior could be painted, primed, masked and masked the interior, primed and painted the hood, and primed and painted the roof cap. Unfortunately, I didn’t use fresh tape on my paint stick while I was painting the hood so it decided to fall off the stick and get some dust on it so I have to sand, prime and repaint. Also got some futz on the roof cap, so that will need to be sanded and repainted as well. Pics soon.
I have also had to re spray all the black I laid down before. Bit of a setback. With ten hours to go I should still be OK. Tried a new paint for the body and it turned into concrete in my airbrush. So I need to pick a new plan for the body as well. Ahhhh the joys of weekend madness!
Take care of business SprueOne. We’ll be here when you get back.
Tim,
Bummer about the paint. I still haven’t learned how to do glossy paint with my airbrush, even after all these years.
Now for some pictures. They stop when I went to bed this morning. There’s really nothing to show as I had to go back and fix the hood and roof cap. I painted the door cards, but I don’t like them so I’ll probably just paint them black and be on my merry way.
Proof of non-startedness. 2037 last night.
The chassis pan is painted (maybe still in primer, it’s a crappy pic).
Exterior primed and masked so I can paint the interior.
Interior painted.
Body on chassis pan.
Body mocked up with roof cap in place.
When I get home, I’ll repaint the hood and then get started on the interior. I painted the bar the front seat mounts to so I can start adding stuff. I thought that this would be a curbside kit, but Tamiya in it’s wisdom has put a full engine in there, which was unexpected. I thought I might run into a problem with the engine color, but it turns out BMC Green is about as specific as British racing green. As long as it’s between an olive green and jade green I’m good to go. I found out that they painted the engines semigloss black in the more modern years, but where’s the fun in that? Roughly 27 hours to go. Keep up the good work lads!
