As I’ve finally decided to start on my thunderbolts as part of the first weathering and diorama project I just wanna clarify something… the aircraft I’m making comes from the 509th fghtr sqdn 405 fghtr group and is silver in colour… My friend Butz told me to paint a base coat of dark grey (the aircraft being 1/72) then paint the silver… but how many coats do you paint ? Do I paint till the entire model is opaque or just paint one layer and get on with the original colour… I use a paint thinner ratio of 1:1.5 with gunze acrylics… He gave me many other valuable techniques but this appears to be the easiest method to weather… He also asked me to use Qtips for panel lines… whats Qtips?

Another question,

How does one go about making oil leaks and gun powder residues on the aircraft(P47)? Do help…

Q-tips are available most everywhere with cosmetics, etc. available. They have the white cotton swabs on both ends of a plastic stick. (ask for them by name, the store will point you in the right direction) Have a good day!

the problem is…are they known by the same name in Singapore??? or are they commonly known as ear buds???

They may be earbuds over there, just get a cotton swab whatever it’s called.

As for the oil leaks etc. First, finish painting the plane then give it a clear gloss coat. Decal it and clear gloss coat again. Then you can use a “wash” of dark paint with about 90% thinner and run it along the panel lines then use the cotton swabs dampened with thinner and wipe off the excess. For the oil leaks, put a little where you want it and let it run down but don’t wipe off as much if any. Use dry brusing for exhaust and gun residue.
