I’ve been a humble kitbasher for 30+ years, But have never tried weathering, ie oil stains, I’ve got a rattle can of clear smoke but I’m wondering how to use it without, Making a mess of a new build.
I would decant it and use it through an airbrush. Take a look at this link for some weathering tips … http://www.swannysmodels.com/Weathering.html
You wouldn’t be able to get the subtle effects needed using a rattle can. Use an airbrush for the Smoke. If you don’t have an airbrush, you can get excellent weathering using pastels.

As I only use a paint brush i use tamiya acrylics mixed with halfords screenwash , let it dry , then with a lump of cotton wool soaked in screenwash wipe it off , works ok for me
i weather with many different techniques. an artist’s oil wash weathers up nicely, as does dry brushing. i use the airbrush to fade out panels and do exhaust stains and other stains. but as mentioned, if you dont’ have access to an airbrush, pastels will do a nice job too. just have fun with it. later.
i raid the wifes make-up bag…many colors and are mostly powders that work well…spray hairspray on top afterwards to rotect the colors.
