I have never had much luck using pigments to weather my model. When put on dry to areas such as the upper hull, i can never control them. as soon as i touch them to the paint, they lock themselves in place and I cant tweak them, leaving unrealistic results. Also, Is it foolish to apply a thin wash of pigments onto the entire model and rub most of it off with brushes, or will that cause the model to look too washed out? Also, i have had good results making mud with pigments mixing them with clear flat and water, but the different tonal variations i added looked very stark, even in regards to the model itself. I guess what i am asking for is a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to applying pigments. I have read the ones in FSM and even Migs tutorial without understanding much.

The best thing I’ve been given to aid my modelling so far is a copy of the MIG pigment DVD by my buddy Craig on the UK MM forum. Now that is SUPERB!!!
It covers the use of pigments on tracks, armour, wheels-everything. It shows you the best way to apply pigment for different uses without getting the problems you’ve mentioned. Perhaps one of the guys on here can put you a copy in the mail?
Tbh, I had the problems you did. I found out that pigments are very strong and nearly ruined a couple of lovely paint jobs. I’d paint a model up and have it looking really nice, I’d apply the final layer of dullcoat and then I’d just cover the build with pigment! It’s a nightmare to shift so I had to look into their use a bit more!
I like to use tiny pots with a small amount of pigment in and use water as the carrier-it works great and looks superb brushed onto wheels as when dry you can go back with a damp Q-Tip and remove the pigment from the outer tyre area. Pigments, water, acrylic resin and plaster make a super mud and there are scores of uses for MIG thinner for washes and pigment fixer. You need to get that DVD buddy. If you were in the UK I’d let you borrow it-don’t ask me to burn a copy as I wouldn’t know where to start! [:$]
