Weathering the Jake - stage 2

This is my 1/48 Nichimo Jake. Stage 1 was a base color of IJN Green. In stage 2 that same green is lightened 25% and thinned a lot then the interior areas of each panel are filled with airpressure set around 3 psi. Heavier coats were applied on horizontal surfaces and less as the surface moved to the verticle. The masks are removed and she is ready for stage 3.

Awesome Swanny, simply awesome!!

Looking great! I really like the effect. Can’t wait to see the finished result.

Your painting talents are absolutely awesome. The building ain’t bad, either.

[#ditto]. Your work is always beyond awesome, and I think Japanese floatplanes (for some reason) are awesome just in of themselves. The “Pete” comes to mind. (Did that make any sense?) Hey, you might inspire me to put a lot more effort into my next paint scheme (hopefully a 75mm cannon-armed He 177 in winter camo).

Or, maybe not.

So, what’s the verdict for the wings? Folded, or extended?

That all depends on where she will ultimately end up on display. If I put her on the self the wings will be folded, if I hang her from the ceiling I’ll tie the invisible thread to the ends of the wings to help close the slight gap at the hinge when the wings are down.

That looks great swammy. I am going to have to try that on my next AC. I like the effect.

Looking good Swanny. Keep us posted.

Regards, Rick

Thanks,

Swanny,
I really like the effect you get lightening the interior portion of the panels. But have you tried this with pastels or pastel dust? If so, or if anyone else has, how does it compare to the airbrush method in terms of ease of application?

That is really cool swanny, great job cant wait for the finished pics.

Very Nice Swanny! Thats a great Job of Preshading. What ever happened to that big German bomber that you were going to paint in something Other than Grerman Camo.

Fantastic Work, Matt. Your weathered panels look ultra realistic!

Regards, Dan

Jeff Gordon, I finished it in a night fighter squiggle …

Kielers, I have worked with pastels for panel lightening before but only as a very last application. The effect tends to get lost when you seal the model if you put them on earlier. I have heard of people mixing them with thinners and airbrushing them on - will have to give that a try some day.

Stunning work Swanny - looks superb !

Now that’s the way to do it! Can’t wait for stage 3… This Jake is going to be something to behold.

Take care,

Mark
