Weathering my Pershing-newbie type questions..............

Hi guys,

Obviously some of you will have been following my M26 Pershing WIP thread.

Can anyone give me any tips on particular areas that would have rusted badly or been damaged from heavy use. I’ve got some stowage-where would it have been put on the Tank? What is the protuding frame thing on the RHS of the turret for-obviously something should be stowed there?

Would the exhause (tailpipe) have rusted? Would the field telephone have stayed the same colour as the tank or been in a wooden box? I found a LOT of pictures that vary massively; some show a rusty tailpipe, some are still green, some have heavy chipping, some very light etc…

Sorry for all the questions but I want to get this build spot-on! It’s only my third ever model and I’ve learnt a lot in the short time I’ve been modelling.

The main thing that is bugging me is colours to use on top of the olive green? I was planning to add some LIGHT chipping applied using packing foam along the edges on the tank-would I best chipping with a black paint or a lighter colour say white/grey? I’ll also be highlighting small areas around hatches etc using a tiny brush and will pin wash certain areas.

Also, What is the best method to bring to life the hammered/pitted surface around the turret? I had this same question in my head when I built my firefly! When I first built my Grey Tiger I kept it simple and drybrushed a very light grey to highlight the angles and it worked very well. I really don’t know what colour(s) to drybrush this olive drab with.

I’m planning on a heavy mud effect on tracks and around the running gear and on the underside, I’ll be trying my Tamiya mud effect paste and MIG powders to do this.

Thanks lads & sorry for all the questions…just remember I haven’t got an AB (yet)

Wellllll…it depends if you want scale or art???

US vehicels in general had very little rust and the coatings and metal prep were quite good.

Same goes for chipping which is a fad of the German builders. Allied vehicles would have scratches and paint wear which can be done using a soft #2 pencil.

The chipping in the photos I would guess is more narrow rather than the “chunky” chipping of the Axis vehicles. Now you could see dents and battle damage which would take off chunks of paint and in those areas might eventually rust slightly

Exhaust is one area which would rust!!..sometimes a lot

Just a few thoughts

Rounds Complete!!

Cheers Redleg,

Scale or art? Hmm, a bit of both I suppose-I just want to inject some life into her.

Anyway; rust on exhaust-sorted!

I’ll work on the basis that this vehicle had some light paint wear & scratches around hatches etc and I’ll do a bit of light foam work on some angles.

I’m planning for a lot of mud on this one too applied in paste form around running gear and on the tracks and underside with a few spatterings up the side. At present the suspension is fully operational and the wheels turn, would I be better fixing the suspension and wheels in place using superglue? When this mud sets obviously it’s going to be hard and I dont want the moving suspension to make it crack.

Any more suggestions guys? Keep 'em coming!

The main couple of things that I’m still thinking about are colours to use when weathering this olive green. I was thinking of lightly dry brushing a black paint around the turret and mantle to highlight the pitting-what do you think?

Secondly, the stowage? any thoughts on where to store it. Would it have been kept inside the Pershing or strapped down on the rear of the tank?
