Hi everyone.

I am building an AMT 1:25 scale caterpillar D8. I want to show tears in the operator’s seat. I’ve tried several experiments that don’t work well. Can anyone have any ideas. I would also like to show the seat cover faded.

How about taking a paper towel and trimming it to the size of the seat. Use a paper towel without a pattern. Tear the paper towel and glue it to the plastic seat with white glue. Then paint it as required.

Had a problem adding a description above. I had the same idea fading the seat back on the Spitfire. Seat is brown then I dry brushed brown and faded white oils. A black micron pen was used for the seams. Not a great pic. I hope you can see.

This is the second time I have the text almost completed and it kicks me out to start again! Last time I try this:

Use toilet paper, separate the sheet to make the paper thinner. Cut to size and drape it over the seat and use Elmer’s diluted with water to form up the paper in place. Let it soak for a bit then carefully use the tip of a #11 blade to create the rip. Let it dry overnight then trim off the extra paper. Paint and detail .

I think that might be what I’m looking for. I had another tip to use a paper towel for the same thing. I’ll you know how it turns out.

It looks great. I painted the seat flat black and then took some Tamiya weathering grey and rubbed in the on the seat then took a stiff brush and removed most of it. It looks close to what I was looking for.

I tried your suggestion. I separated the plys of paper, but, that left the paper too thin. It ripped when I tried to apply the diluted white glue. I used both plys and that worked. It turn out pretty good I think for a first time. I would post a picture, but, I haven’t figured out how to do that.

Worn seat

This is the seat using your suggestion to use toilet paper. Any coment will be greatly appreciated

I would use a 2-part epoxy putty, like Aves A&B (aka Apoxie Sculpt), or Milliput, or whatever 2-part epoxy putty you can find (in the old days, we used plumber’s putty), to sculpt the seat cushions. Then you can nick and cut little tears or cracks in the upholstery. If the seat has the cushions molded on, you’ll probably want to sand that off first.
