I have a resin base from Just Plane Stuff–one of the Luftwaffe wooden plank runway bases. The surface detail is outstanding. My question is–I want to paint it in a way that simulates the old light gray appearance of very old, weathered dessicated wood planking. I don’t want it to be brown “wood color”. Anyone have ideas on how to best achieve this effect? What colors/weathering techniques should I use? Also, any ideas for the dirt/grass portions? I am going to use it for a FW190D of the JV44 (Red 1).
Here’s my idea. Get a dark brown, almost purple color and paint it as a basecoat. Then dry brush it with a neutral grey. After that, dry brush it with a lighter coat of white. Wash it down with a wash of burnt umber. Coat with a dullcoat.
That’s my simple suggestion. I’m sure someone else will be along with some other better ideas.
I think you’ve answered your own question with this statement…
Most wood, is a light color to begin with. A blonde color. You can probobly start with a khaki, dark yellow, or other light wood color as a base, A heavy wash of grey with successive lighter grey to white drybrushings to achieve your final effect. Any of the base color that shows through wil appear like scraped wood or the surface being exposed through use.
Thank you for the advice–I suppose I will also have to simulate tire marks as well–this could be fun! I could also use some model railroading fake grass to simulate patches of grass growing between the planks. Either suggestion looks like it could give good results…no reason not to try both. The base is a yellow color to begin with, and the texture is pretty amazing…you can feel the wood grain.
