Washes and tints

On washes, particularly on enamel finishes, would you use oil paints and a tupernoid? Or would you an acrylic based wash? Also, can you use a turpernoid based wash on acrylics? Ditto for tints.

You have to use acrylic wash (mix a few drops of dish washing soap to break up the surface tension) for enamal finishes, otherwise the oil or Turpernoid may eat into your finish. Alternatively, if you clear coat your paint job with Future, you can use oil and/or turpernoid after letting it cure.

You can also use watercolour washes.

Very easy to correct if you cock up.

I use an odourless thinner (from an art supplies store) for my artists oils which doesn’t seem to affect either acrylics or enamels. Well actually I havent tried it over enamels because I don’t use them, but I know it won’t mix with MM enamels when wet, so I am presuming it won’t affect the enamels when dry.

Of course this doesn’t help anyone outside Australia, but I am sure there are similar products available in your localities.

WB, I paint with Model Master II enamels, then MMII laquer glosscoat, then decal, glosscoat, and then a turpenoid/artist oil wash/filter, and then the same for a pinwash. Then MMII dullcoat, then the weathering and the little details. To sum it all up, yes you can use a tupenoid/oil wash over properly prepared enamels.
