Wash question

Hi everyone,

What is the best color (or is there?) to do a wash with on Armour (or any model). Should it be a slightly darker shade of the base color, should it be black…etc…??? I washed a Sherman with a black wash and it came out a little too dark for my liking (kind of lost the base color…sort of)…should I have used the base color with a little black mixed in (or even brown)??

Thanks…

Kevin

All I can say is, don’t use black. It’s way too dark, and will look very unrealistic.
It all depends on what your basecoat is.
For me, if I’m painting desert camo, I usually use burnt sienna or something close to it for a wash. If it’s the standard OD or other green, a dark dark dark green mixed with a little bit of brown.

Yellow Ochre oil paint works well for a desert camo wash - you just got to thin it down a lot.
I’ve also used SMOKE (Tamiya Color X-19) mixed with water so that it is really thin as an effective wash.

Thanks…
