How do you guys feel about the post highlighting wash for olive drab armor – black or dark brown? I’m working on my first OD build-up in years, an M101 howitzer, and I’m at the wash stage. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
can you describe the gun or post a picture of your kit, cause I think we have a few of them on display around were I’m stationed and I might be able to get you a good refference picture?
Ok, sure. It is an M101 howitzer. I am painting mine for WWII, as that’s what the Italeri model represents. Here’s some box art from the kit if it helps:

While of course it will be great to see pics of the actual magilla, my question is more about modeling technique, about the kind of wash you’d use on OD.
Thanks,
Larry
we have those right infront of our btn headquarters building.
if you want I can snap off some pics of them?
Hey, that would be great! Thanks.
I’ll have them on ronUSMC’s web page this evening ( my time {germany}), if that’s good?
I have used black artist oils for my washes on olive drab before.
It works good for me. You might want to try it on a parts box piece before attempting it on the actual project.
I put those pics up on ronUSMC’s webpage under the reference section, you can’t miss it!
Hey, Redleg, sounds great! Let me ask you, though, what is RonUSMC’s webpage? Could you give the url?
Thanks so much for taking the pics!

that should take you to the spot with the different choices from refference to models etc. etc.
or try this:
ok, I tried these myself and they both take you to the main page, if you go to the general model discussion once you get in that thread, you’ll see some topics that start with sticky, it’s the one with the free online image
ok, I tried these myself and they both take you to the main page, if you go to the general model discussion once you get in that thread, you’ll see some topics that start with sticky, it’s the one with the free online image gallery upload for everyone. that’s the one you want to check out, once you click on the #3 you’ll scroll down and see a hyperlink for the addresses I gave you, they work from this point! it’ll take you to the the modeling options like reference armor etc etc, click reference images then click armor that will take you to the reference page with all kinds of albums. have fun?
Black works fine. ‘Brown’ can range from raw sienna (red brown) to Burnt Umber (dark brown) some will make the ‘lowlights’ look too light, others work just fine. If you want something in between, try using brown and darkening it with black.
Hey, how do I get rid of the ‘snap together’ under my name? I do kits and scratch build. help… !
Ron.
(Waves magic wand.) There ya go! I took care of it for you. [;)]
Seriously, though, it’s a rank. Beginners here get an appropriate beginner’s title – snap together is pefect for this modeling forum. It has nothing to do with what you actually build – it is an indication of how many posts you have made here. You just passed the 10 mark, so now, like me, you are “box stock.”
BTW, don’t take titles too seriously. I am on some boards where idiots who post tons of gibberish have exalted titles just because they post their garbage all over the board, a hundred messages every day! [:0]
[?] What thread is that?
Can you e-mail them to me, and I’ll just host them and put them up here for others to see?
BTW, are those guns OD?
tep they are OD, but the sights are poliched brass due to they are on display infront of a building. so just imagine it as all OD.

I just updated and renamed the album… should be all set now.
Whoa! Thanks a bunch. Very cool to see the real deal. Will help with a little superdetailing too.
So every square in of the gun would be OD?
