Wash colors?

While I’ve always used black colored washes. I have always seen in magazines people using burnt umber or burnt sienna.

I’m working on an early 109 and have painted the cockpit RLM 02. So the question is “what is the better color wash to use?”

  1. Lamp black

  2. Raw umber

  3. Burnt umber

  4. Burnt sienna

Add Paynes Gray to your list. It us a dark dark blue-gray

Go outside tomorrow (its dark here now) and look at the shadows on under the eaves of your house. What color are they? (hint – blue gray)

The black is just too harsh. The siennas and umbers are brown tones. They are fine if there i a dirt component to your shadow. But for pure light shadow I prefer Paynes Gray.
