Warbird Modeling

Warbird Modeling has been out for a few weeks now, and we’ve had some positive feedback. But…I thought I’d do a little informal poll just because I’m curious. So here’s the question: What was your favorite article in Warbird Modeling?

I leave this thread unlocked so members can add comments if they like. I’d also like to know what people thought about the color profile drawings at the ends of the articles.

After you’ve finished, check out Part 2 of the poll.

Lawrence, I haven’t had time to sit down and read it yet but when I do I’ll come back and do your poll for you!

Psst, could you look at my post farther down about the "Sticky"s? I don’t think Dave has seen it yet either. I thought he handled most of that type stuff so I don’t mean to slight you [:D].

Eric

Eric, I just looked at it and posted a response.

I really liked the piece on Iti 109’s. But I’m a research guru, so that figures! [:p]

Fade to Black…

I thought all the articles were great, but chose the B-17 as it appeared to be the most comprehensive (most pictures, detailed info on the building and finishing of kit, etc). I’d say the Fw-190 would be a close second though. Thanks.

This is a great bonus issue. It will be in my reference files for a long time.

I’m fairly new to the hobby (a retread) and to Fine Scale (subscriber). Is this or are there plans for this to be an annual “bonus”? If yes, I’d like to nominate a B-24J build-up for the next Warbird issue.

Thanks agian for a great forum and magazine.

Jim

I really liked the B-17 article, as well as Galland’s 109 and the two Italian fighters. Intersting material that I wouldn’t otherwise have been able to see. Thanks, FSM. - Ed

Mag hasn’t arrived down my way yet. Please keep poll open for a while.

when will warbird modelling come out in OZ?

1st of all, I am an avid reader and collector of Finescale.

I favor the B-17 overall and am planning to build one in the near future and this special issue will be of great value and reference.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to many more issues of the “Special Issue”!

Loved the magazine I am a big fan warbirds, there are so many of them. So if you decide to do a second one here are a few suggestions the P-38 lightning,
Avro Lancaster, and the “Stuka”. Going to keep this for reference library.

the mag was good but it lacked the info on how & what was updated and the pix are also a major plus but that’s where it was the worse but all in all I’d get the next one if there is another one coming out soon

I was a little disappointed with the magazine only because it wasn’t what I had expected, but after reading it a while I have grown to like it. The article on the Georges was my favorite because it foucused more on technique than research.

The P-51, B-17, and Adolf Galland’s Me 109 stood out the most for me. A great compilation!

Regards, Dan

Im a Luftwaffe nut so the 109 stood out the most, but I enjoyed them all.

I agreed that the aircraft in the issue are important except one. How did you come to conclude that the George fits in the top ten and not the Zero. I know the George was a superior fighter but the greater history maker was the Zero, was it not? Don’t get me wrong, thanks to your Warbirds issue, I just went out and bought a george kit. I am eagerly awaiting the Great Modeling 2004.

I liked the Italian 109 article(finalmente!)maybe some one could do one on Italian Bombers?CZ-1007?..I am enamored of the B-17, that article was informative.
nicely done.

I thought the issue was a nice one. I’ve been looking through it a little at a time as it permits. The Flying Fortress intrigued me the most. The B-17 always appealed to me, even as a kid.

I enjoy modeling topics, and I appreciate the effort… if you’re asking though, what I’d really like to see is a DETAILED airbrushing issue. I’ve seen all the articles over the year, as I have always used buying my magazines as an excuse to visit my local hobby shops. I’m frustrated to the point of quitting this hobby and very discouraged with the lack of truly brushable enamels (acrylics too, for that matter) and I’m SICK of trying to run a hazardous materials superfund site trying to have a place to airbrush.

I’m sick of airbrush splatter, spitting, spending money on tips, thinners, different brans of paint, struggling to find the ratio of solvent / thinner, etc to paint. I’m sick of repainting models over and over because the thing refuses to function at all sometimes, or works one day, and then won’t spray a fine line the next. I just want to scream I’m so sick of wasting half the evening trying to deal with it.

I’ve been involved in this hobby for 34 years and I love it, but I just do not have the time to deal with the rules constantly changing. I have a job, child, and I do community service work. Modeling WILL fall by the wayside if something doesn’t happen significant to help me deal with this airbrush issue. I have a Badger, a Model Master and a Paasche airbrush. I own a Paasche compressor and all the tips, cups etc… WHAT THE DEVIL AM I DOING WRONG.

What was wrong with paint that brushed? Old Humbrol was a good example. You can’t even get an interior color for a cockpit that doesn’t leave massive streaks of the light gray plastic showing through it. At $2.50 per bottle, should you not be able to dual role the stuff?

Stratojet… one frustrated modeler…

Stratojet (and others in his predicament):

Your problems are not uncommon, believe me! We all go through this. Some paints are need considerable thinning to make them “airbrushable,” and others are too thin for brush painting, but there are ways to handle both problems.

Go on over to the Painting/Airbrushing forum and check out the discussion there, including the FAQ at the top of the listings.

The layout on the B-17 “Bit O’ Lace” was phenomenal! The article was great, as was the photos. Highly detailed, difficult project presented in a very readable, followable manner. Thanks to all those who also suggested Scale Aviation Modeller as another option for an “all aircraft” model mag. I can’t wait until you press your next Warbird Modeling special issue! Hammer down!

Over and out.
