"War in the Desert" African Campaign GB - Any interest?

Hello all,

For those of you who missed the original thread, there’s been some talk over what GB’s we’d like to see in the near future. One of the more popular ideas, a “Campaign” GB similar to the Kursk build, was North Africa 1940-1942. Is anyone interested in this possibility? There was some debate over whether to focus on the African campaign or to do the Italian Campaign instead - personally I think that an Africa build would be better, because Italian campaign vehicles are more or less the same in appearance as their Northern European counterparts, while African vehicles are very different from anything else, from Afrikabraun Panzers to gray and tan camouflaged Shermans, and of course infantry in shorts and pith helmets[;)]

Anybody interested? We wouldn’t start until December 1st at the earliest, since we’ve got the Kursk GB to finish, and most of the GB addicts around here could use at least a month to catch up on smaller GB’s[:P]

If we get a sizeable crowd here in the armor forums, we might open it up to those guys who build those flying things that look like skinny tanks with really short, wide fenders - you know?

I sure am. But I am already commited to three other group builds currently. But with a start date in December I might just do it.

I’m in with either the DML M2 or Mk IV F2…

As usual - I’m in! Pending, of course, a trip through my stash to see what I have in there that would qualify. Hmmm. [?]

Ohhhh…I’m possibly in. I was contemplating one after the Kursk one was finished. I figure it might garner alot of interest. Well, since I’m not ready to do my Pz III G yet, I might offer AFV’s 88mm. Possibly Italeri’s Crusader II.

I have several kits in my stash that would fit the bill for his GB. Count me in. The one I had planned to start next was a Pz IIIE upgunned to 50mm. This was a vehicle from 5th Panzer Regiment still marked as 3rd Panzer Division when it was assigned to the 5th Light Division. The Pz III’s that were in this unit were all modified up to 50mm turret gun standard prior to being sent to North Africa. I have two pictures of this vehicle from a book on the 21st Panzer Division. Its also still in Panzer Grey.

I am, but do you accept noobs? or rahter modelers that havent modeled in 30 years? Funny I just started a thread on the colors of the Afrika Corps for a diorama I am contemplating.

Also what exactley is a GB?

Thanks,

Kevin

I have 8 ton Sd. Kfz 11 (AFV), 2 Pak 40 (Tamiya), Opel (Italeri?), 2x 88 Flak (Both Tamiya, one “North Afrika Campaign”) and a Horch 1A with a flak 38 (Tamiya)… oh and a Sd. Kfz 250/3 “Greif” (Dragon).

Hi Kevin/Glueitgood,

GB = Group Build

I’m just returning to this hobby as well (after taking a long, very long vacation away from the hobby), so if you join, I’ll join too.

A Group Build is a build where everyone builds a related build in common to the topic: i.e. Tiger GB, battle of Kursk, etc. There are start and stop dates and guidelines and such. Overall, they are low-key and no awards are provided.

Sounds like fun. I am in. Maybe with the Opel (as it has an engine to detail and a flak 38) or the Sd.Kfz 11 8 ton towing a flak 40.

I will keep an eye out for the start date and rules.

Kevin

Definately sign me up for this one without a doubt! My PZ III G is chomping at the bit to be built so I’ll do that one![8D][wow]

Finally!..something without Zimm…I’ve been catching a buzz from all this Toluene in the Squadron green putty I’ve been inhaling![banghead][oops]

I’d like to join this, too. Thinking of a Panzer 1A from Tristar, if that’s eligible. If not, any suggestions?

And 9toe, don’t lie, you’re gonna miss that high[:D]

This would give me an excuse to pick up the Dragon Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.E “3-in-1” and Ausf.D that I’ve wanted for some time. I’d be in for this GB.

I know I have a kit in the stash of a German tank. It’s a Tamiya and comes in a smallish box with a couple soldiers running along side them. I know it’s from the African campaign because they’re wearing khaki shorts. I should save money and dig that oldie out…

Must be the venerable old Pz II. My that’s old. Almost as much as me. [:D]

I think you’re right. If my memory serves, I picked it up 6 years ago for about $10. I figured it’d make a nice weekend project some day. Then I found a review of it…

LOL. There was once a member who put $120+ into making this same kit a winner. I just shook my head in disbelievement. Hey whatever floats the boat. Now you can buy the new Cyberhobby kit for $40.

OK, you twisted my arm. I’m in. I’m thinking Panzer IV or even early Tiger I.

LOL!!!..yeah!..I’ll probably suffer from Zimm withdrawl!!![BH]LOL!

well let’s try this again. last time I bit off too much, never did finish it [Kelly’s Heros Sherman the speaker killed me [:O] ]. so simple Stuart tank either American or a Honey not sure yet probably a Tamiya kit maybe an Academy…

If we start in December I’m in with a PzIII. I haven’t built a thing since April, having moved half way across the country! Finally bought a house and will be moving next week, should be unpacked and ready then.
