WANTED: Huey UH-1D Gunship in 1/32

I don’t recall the manufacturer of the kit, but I had a kit of the Huey in the mid 1980s. I think it came with several weapon systems. No figures. No unit designation that I remember.

I would love to get one of those kits if anybody could help me out. I have searched about all I care to online. I have found several out-of-production Hueys, but not the specific one.

Bottom line…I am looking for a 1/32/35/ or even 48 scale Huey D model with the M16 system…thats two M60s and one 2.75" rocket pod on each side.

If you have leads, please email me:

You are talking about the old Revell 1/32 UH-1D gunship kit. It is incorrect though. The US Military didn’t use D models as gunships nor with the M16 armament system on them. Only B/C models were used in the gunship role. All D/H models were Slicks, troop transports with M23 armament systems mounted (M60 pintle mount on each side). The M60s in the Revell kit are horrible too, not detailed at all. The rest of the model is pretty good though. The Revell kit is currently out of production, but frequently on eBay.

Here is one; UH-1D Gunship.

Sorry, I don’t know of any B or C model kit that has the M16 armament system in it.

Good luck.

Gino & ODAbasher:
Wayne Mutza's WALK AROUND UH-1 GUNSHIPS states to the effect that the only long fuselage
(D/H) heavily armed Hueys were RAAF and VNAF but a couple of pages later he says,
"Long-fuselage Huey variants were designed primarily for the troop transport role; however,
they qualified as gunships when equipped with offensive armament." It depends on whose
definition you want to accept but by and large, MOST gunships were B or C models.
Monogram had a 1/48th B/C (?) model that's old as the hills but has been re-released a few times
and should be available. It's a very simple, easy build. In more recent years, MRC released
a 'C' in 1/35 scale that had come out under other company names I think in two versions,
and it was nicely molded. This is the kit you should get!! There were also 1/35 "D/H" kits
fairly recently under the PANDA co. name and is very good and I think it came out as a troop
carrier slick and a gunship but as Gino said about the Revell kits, if you want a gunship
you should be taslking about a B or a C model. As per the Revell kit, check out Ebay
or if you can get to any model shows, or check some of the mail order companies online.
FYI there's another thread about HUEYs talking more about detailing a Huey model.
Good luck!
Howie

Your best bet for a UH-1 Gunship is the “C” by MRC/Academy. It’s 1/35 scale and get the one listed as the “Frog” which incudes two sets of markings for 174th AHC Sharks and has every armament combination included except the eary “quad 60’s”. Just missing the correct sight for the 40 mm system.

This might be the one your on about, its a UH-1B i built it back in the 80’s it came in a rambo box set, with the river patrol boat. as you can see it has the M6 quads

I think it has been re-released as this

Andy

ODABasher,

Andy’s correct. However, keep in mind that the Revell kit hhas some inaccuracies. The tail fin and horizontal stabs are indicative of a B model Huey, but the rotorhead and left hand fuel filler cap are indicative of a C model. You can also find an M-16 system in 1/72 scale or 1/100 scale in the Revell UH-1H “Gunship” models. In 1/72 scale you could either use the Italeri UH-1B or Uh-1C kit and put the M-16 system from the Revell kit on it. However, the 60’s are so poorly detailed in the Revell kit that you might be just as good scratchbuilding it. Good luck!

Ray

The “Rambo” Huey kit is a 1/24th scale kit has it does have some problems with accuracy. It has been re-released several times.

The “Rambo” Huey & patrol boat kit is 1/48 scale. You can get a “Rambo” gunship on its own in 1/24 scale

The M60s used with that system are basic M60s with a few modified components. First they have an electric solenoid for firing thr gun, and a modified buttstock/buffer. Buttstock/buffer is the same kind used on the Seawolves free 60s. The M60Ds from the DML 1st cav figure kit can be easily modified to C configuration. Here are some pics.

M60D

M60C

I have seen pictures where the M60C barrels still had front sight post installed, I guess the had to use what they had.

Great idea Firehawk but which DML 1st Cav set do you mean, from the looks of the “Nam” set they only have M16’s?

Andy

Should be from the DML Helo Crew set. That is the only one that includes M60Ds. I did the same thing, convereted some D’s to make an accurate M16 armament system. The DML Light SEAL Support Craft boat also has 3 M60s without the front hand guards that will work as well.

Skypirate, Heavyarty hit the nail on the head. I did mean the helo crew kit and i have foegotten about the LSSC kit. I remember that the Australian army flew miniguns on their UH-1D,H that would look cool in 1/32.

Jose

The DML Modern Machine Gun set has M-60D’s with attachable spade grips.

Nope, sorry, but it does not. The Modern Machine Gun Set has standard M60s and USMC M60E3s, but no M60Ds.

My mistake, it is the Vietnam War Infantry Weapons set #3818.

I had forgotten about that set. It does have some great weapons in it. Good luck finding it though. It is long out of production. I have been searching for it for years and have never seen it in any shop or at any web-based hobby supplier.

Gino

yea ive just looked, none to be found, found a picture of the seal craft, looks good but out of stock. the M16 system on the revell huey UH-1H is terrible, cant remember what the 1/48 hog 60’s are like, they seem to be the only 2 above 1/72 with that armament, would be nice to have them in 1/35 for the academy models, Is that what you converted the 1/35 seal guns for?

Andy

Firehawk

The 1/32 Revell UH/1H-D that Gino pointed out for you earlier in the post comes with mininguns for the RAAF, im working on one at the moment but im turning it into an Air Cav slick. If i can get hold of another 2 i would like to build the bushranger and a nighthawk versions. Like Gino said its not a bad kit, i like it for the size, its just a shame you cant get UH-1B/Cs in 1/32 or UH-1D/Hs in 1/35.

Andy

Dragon re-releasing Nam helo crew this year so…

Andy

Yes, I used them on an Academy UH-1C gunship.

You can. Panda has 2 UH-1D kits in 1/35. They have the necessary parts to build them as H models as well. Neither comes with any weapons though. They are pretty good, but weak on interior details.
