I’ve opened this one up, and made a start. Upon first look and dry-fit, it looks sweet. Minimal clean up, with jus’ a little putty work at a few selected joins, after assembly.

Celts! man, everything is more interesting when it’s your ancestors! (E’m a wee bit Irish, ye sees) Anyway, can’t wait to see how you do it, with so many endless posibilities…Ive seen references of them going to battle in everything from nude to full plaid clothing to armor and animal skins. I always thought it would be cool to replicate one of those plaid designs on pant, but it would be very hard in 1/35. Some Braveheart style face paint or tatoos would look cool too.
How are you, Ian? I haven’t spoke to you for some time.
The cloak fits very well, but needed a tiny amount of work to make it sit tight on the shoulders. Nothin’ a dremel cannot take care of. It will still need a small amount of liquid putty, to make it look like it ‘grew’ there, so to speak.

I’m likely going to come off sounding like a “know it all arse”, but being Scottish, Welsh and Irish descent myself (and plenty of Prussian) and a Great Highland and Irish Uilleann piper, I HAVE to speak up:
In the context of Scottish Highland attire, it started out as an integral part of the length of cloth that was worn as a Great Kilt, the breacan feile, feileadh mhor, or philamore.
However, since the advent of the separate little kilt (phillabeg, or feilidh-beag) , it is now a disconnected piece in of itself.
Just to clarify. ![]()
Very interesting, you learn something new every day!
Anyways, I’m doing fine, thanks for asking. I kind of go in and out of modelling, as in losing interest for a month or two, and then while I’m cleaning my shelves a model catches my eye and, well, lets just say my wallet mysteriously gets much lighter. How many of these metal figures are you planning to do? You’ve got it made man, you’re a master treadhead and a…a…[censored] there isn’t any slang for a figure painter! Any plans on coming back and visiting your mates in the armor forum? I loved that panzer you finished a while ago!
Yeah, if and when Dragon release the PzI bison. [:D]
I needed to get the base attached to this figure, ‘cos the spear and shield hand work off of it. It all mates up perfectly. After puttyin’ the wrist on his shield hand, its gonna’ be awkward sandin’ it, though.
Gonna’ have to get me some sandin’ sticks, methinks!

I genrally replace lances and flag poles with appropriately sized brass rod. A bit of work at the point and in drilling out the hand, but these are muchmore sturdy and won’t bend llike white metal.
I hear ya’, AJ.
This is one of those ‘sweet’ modellin’ moments!
I had some 3.2mm styrene tubin’ lurkin’ around my bench, so I dug it out and decided on creatin’ a bronze brace for this figure. The inside diameter was too small to begin with so I reamed it out with a round file, it took about half an hour, but was well worth it.
I now do not need to worry about puttyin’ the wrist, the brace will cover the join totally and will constitute a far better bond when attached. This now frees up those hindered areas for paintin’, that would have been difficult to reach if the shield was in place. The hand and shield can now be painted as a seperate piece, and assembled after.
The brace still needs a bit of cleanin’ up, and some stud details applied with liquid putty.

Interesting figure. Fingers, check yer PM
The joins are all puttied, and is now ready for the black undercoat.

Very nice work so far Eddie. Looking forward to seeing it painted.
Regards, Rick
hey eddie check out my 54mm swordsman tell me what you think?
Here is the cuirass painted. I used GW Tin Bitz mixed w/ Black, and then built up some highlight coats by addin’ GW Burnished Gold to the mix.

I’ve got the tunic painted in. I used Vallejo Violet Red, shaded with Dioxazine Purple mixed w/ lamp Black. For the highlights I used Dioxazine Purple mixed w/ Cadmium dark Red and Naples Yellow Hue.

just curious ummmmm… whats that covering his crotch area looks like a animal skin thing?
Yeah, its animal skin. Its kinda like a precursor to the sporran, worn by the scottish. [:)]
I like paintin’ fur, and couldn’t wait to get this painted in.
I used Vallejo German Camo’ Black Brown for the base, then Red Leather, Ochre Brown and Iraqi Sand mixed to gether respectively for the highlights. The final highlight was Iraqi Sand used straight from the bottle.

Just keeps looking better & better. Keep us posted.
Regards, Rick
Thanks, Rick.
It was difficult to come up with a pattern for this period of celt. I did paint a very intricate pattern on his skirt but it ended up lookin’ too much like tartan, or even worse - a goddamn tablecloth. It didn’t look right in the context of this figure, ‘cos he looks more like someone from the La Tene or Halstatt period.
Anyway, I settled on somethin’ simpler.

Here is the tablecloth:
