I’m looking for Volkswagen kits with decent engines. Specifically I need an air cooled engine from a bug or van and modern water cooled 4 cyl engine like a Jetta or Golf. Diesel would be even better but I don’t think anyone makes one. I was looking at several kits but many don’t mention if an engine is included, I looked at a Revell Golf that showed an engine but it looks like it is molded in and not a seperate engine.
For a flat four you’ll find a good engine in Tamiya’s Beetle and Karmann Ghia kits. Don’t know about the Rabbit engine. If you wan’t a really hot flat four you can have a look at Fujimi’s Porsche 356 kits in the enthusiast series, they rock big time. You even get the crank with rods and pistons in these one’s.
Does anybody make a 1/25 or 1/24 scale model of squirles and a squirl cage that sounds like it is 1 degree off on half of its cylinders? Sorry, I could not resist. One of the other posters got it right. Get a porsche engine. Porsche, VW, they are all the same! A porsche ain’t nothin but a fancy Volkswagon. (in jest) rangerj
VW engines are popular as larger fire pump motors, quite a few are now being sold with the VW diesel which I understand at 1/25 is not that much different from the water cooled gas 4 cyl, I’m thinkng the Porsche engine would be a bit hot for a diesel utility motor [:)] they would also be free standing which is why I want ones with decent detail, doesn’t have to be spectacular but better than molded into the frame.
The old air cooled motor was also apparently used for pumps and generators, so I guess I’m off to find a Tamiya bug. I would like to do a bus or transporter but I understand the Hasegawa kits don’t have engines.
Anyone ever build the Vanagon Camper? I’ve seen a few of those kits (Revell?) which would have the water cooled engine, maybe even a diesel but I don’t know if it includes a motor.
Is that the one that can be built as a tuner or GTI? If so that is the one I saw that looked molded in, if the engine is decent I’ll go back and get it.
Hey you guys! So this is where you guys hang you when you’re not over at the Scale Auto forum…
I was just checking out this forum when I found this thread.
AaronW, I just found a few pics of one of those aircooled pumps I was talking about over at SA. It’s on a Norwegian VW forum, but click on the links in the thread and the pics pop up. Or you can start taking Norwegian lessons…[(-D]
Ooops forgot that…

This is actually a Porsche industrial engine, but apart from the early style fan housing and the Scintilla magneto ignition, it’s about identical to the VW engine you can find in Tamiya’s VW kits. A suitable pump assembly can be found in Italeri’s Fire Jeep. With slight modifications it could work fine. The trailer chassis would have to be scratch built thoug.
