Just bought a cool 1/35th VW type 87 bug. The kit instructions indicate it was in Africa. Was it used in europe and russia as well? I am doing a dio set in russia and would like to include it but the research I’ve done just keeps sending me to VW fan sites with histories on the company pix of civilian bugs.
yes they were used all over, but in limited numbers compared to the Kubelwagon
IT was used everywhere, but as caveman said, not as many were used as the kubelwagen

I got my VW 87 off ebay tigerman. It’s made by a company called CMK, distributed by MPM in the Czech Republic, kit # T35013. It’s a nice model, very straight forward, no extras and it only has decals for a VW posted in africa. All that means is I’ll be able to have a lot of fun detailing it.

This reminds me of the philippine version of the Kubelwagen, it was known here as “Sakbayan” short for Sasakyan Bayan, roughly translated as “vehicle of the town(or city/community)” It’s also powered by a Volkswagen engine almost similar to the bug. The body is the same as the Kubelwagen, but it has flat panels throughout like a box, a simplified version if you will. This vehicle is rarely known here today and is even rarer to find.[:)]
There is also an Afrika version made by Italeri I beleive. The local hobby shop sold it before I could get it. I beleive this verison comes with about 3 figs and desert tires. It may have some diorama extras as well. There is also a smaller scale [1/48 maybe ?] of a VW ambulance. Saw that one on ebay. I didn’t bid because I want to stay in 1/35. I still may get one. I prefer the odd vehicles.
Yeh, I saw those VW ambulances on ebay here too. But I do 1/35th aswell so it wasn’t much use to me. I am now interested in doing some planes though. Maybe a 1/48 Junkers Ju 52 just arrived with a load of wounded men from Stalingrad and one of those ambulances sitting next to it on the runway!
That would be cool! I beleve there was a separate set of german hospital personell [a doc and a couple nurses I beleive] that was to scale with those VW ambulances as well. I got a package waiting for me at the house and I it’s my Land Rover ambulance that has just come today. I can’t wait to get home and see!
