Vignette composition question

Hey all!

I’m building a vignette for my 1/16 Feldmarschall Rommel figure, consisting of a 40 gallon steel drum, with a mug and map on it.

My question is: which side of the figure should the drum be, left or right?
From pics on the web, I figured that Rommel was right-handed, however my model looks slightly to his left.

Please, all pointers and comments are welcome…

TIA
Quintin

It doesn’t matter, does it?
However, from those 2 pictures you have there, the drum on the left of Rommel looks better. Maybe of the the way he’s standing. It looks like he’s leaning more towards his right. (it could be the camera angle though). Just my thoughts. [:)]

Anyway… nicely done Quintin. Did you scratch build the drum and the mug?

Hi umustb

Yip, the drum was scratchbuilt from plastic card and Tamiya putty. The mug was made from an old 1/48 drop tank.

Keep well!

Oh… nice. I can’t wait to see your finished vignette now. [:D]
Maybe sand for the ground work would look nice [:P]

Cheers

Personaly I don`t think it would matter, when all is chosen, built and finished it will look great, placing is only one small part of putting a vig together, detail is another and both are builders preference.

Here is my suggestion

Put him standing slightly behind the barrel on the left of the barrel. Put some dirt mud texture and have some tall grass in the foreground and have some maps/ papers laying on the barrel as if he were reading them

Hi Themage

Thanks for your suggestion. After carefully looking at both pics, I decided to put the drum to Rommel’s right and slightly to the back. He is leaning slightly to his right, and thus, ‘into’ the vignette. My plan was to have a map draped over the drum as if he were reading it.

Your grass idea sounds very good, I think I’ll try it.

Keep well!
