From most pictures I have seen the tail code is “AB” for tomcats based on the USS America. My superscale sheet, for some reason, has the tail code “AD”. Did they ever use this tail code or did superscale goof?
One thing I’ve learned is to never say never. So, with that in mind, I’ve never seen pictures of a VF-102 with the AD tailcode. The modex number (154) may give a clue as to why there is an AD tailcode, however. My guess would be that it was an a/c from VF-101 that had Diamondback markings applied just before the squadron transitioned from the F-4. It would be similar to what VF-33 did. They “borrowed” a Tomcat to put on initial squadron markings. I know what decal sheet you’re talking about. If you would like the regular markings with the AB tailcode, I have the later Superscale sheet that has the “correct” markings on it. Let me know if you’d like them.

I talked with a friend of mine who knows the Maintenance Control Officer for VF-101. The a/c was indeed a VF-101 plane on loan to VF-102 to train TARPS crews. The rest of the squadron never had the AD tailcode.
