VERY thin wire source

Does anyone have a source for very thin wire, approximately .10 or .15 mm? Preferable something soft like copper, or even solder wire would work. TIA!

Speaker wire, old headphones, telephone wire, old extension cords. Just strip off the insulation. Chances are, you have some of these around the house.

Hafta echo Aj, Frank…lightweight headphone wire is about as tiny as it gets and still be able to work it. The stuff doesn’t bend easily into angles…you have to be patient…it’s very ‘springy’ for what it is.

You could use magnet wire. They are made of copper and are fairly strong and great for model building applications as they come in a variety of gauges. Here is a link where I picked up a couple of spools: http://www.bulkwire.com/

Thanks for the help guys! Think I managed to find what I was looking for. [tup]

If your close to a Harbor Frieghts they have spools of Safety wire. The 0.32 is kinda stiff 0.25 and 0.20 are thin and flexible.

Good Luck !

I cut open some crappy CAT-5 cable and got some very nice thin strands. I’ll never use all of it!

I scavenge all of my electrical equipment, when something is worn out. That’s a scratchbuilder’s tip from waaaaaaaaay back. Other appliances, too, and lights, lamps. Anything with an electrical cord, and any modern electrical equipment, be it a PC, keyboard, mouse, or stereo or radio.

I also keep old CD jewel cases, especially the clear pieces.

I even keep the fake credit cards that come in the unsolicited credit card applications that I get. The plastic on most of them isn’t too good anymore for use as scratching stock, because much of it is too soft, but they make good palettes for mixing 2-part epoxies, or paints.

And how 'bout those Altoid boxes? I don’t eat the mints, but people I work with do, and they give me the tins. I use them for storing/sorting small items. In my big toolbox (for my construction tools, not modeling), I use them for screw bits, nails and other fasteners.

Sorry, I’ve run on a bit, away from the topic. Upshot is, think carefully before you throw something out!

Brad
