We were cleaning the basement a few days ago, and opened up a trunk that had been closed for who knows how long. We went through the stuff, looked at all the cool stuff, etc., etc. Then, I noticed an old newspaper in the bottom. It was almost falling apart, but still readable. I looked at the date and about had a heart attack- It was February 20- 1945!
The headline read as follows- (cut off)NES WIN PRIZE IWO AIRFIELD Being a HUGE WWII buff, this was one of the best things I have ever found in my house! Another article that I thought was intresting was an editorial on the government of post-war Germany. It was funny to see a person discussing an event that happened almost 60 years ago. It blew me away.

Oh wow, very cool. Hopefully you can get a pic up soon. I’m afraid to look at what the oldest tihing in my house is. Probably a can or jar of food or the like.

P.S. I found something similar a few years ago, but it was a paper from 1943. You should have seen the baseball saleries then. Somebody for the Yankees was getting $40,000, and that was big news.
was at work one night and a kid brought in a bunch of yellowed papers. each was well worn and all from the years 1940 and 1941 prior to pearl harbor. i was overwhelmed by the sense of history in those columns.
Thats pretty cool. Reminds me of a christmas treet hat my wife got from her mom. we were pulling it of the box and in the bottom was some old newspapers. Date was July 20 1969 and headline was about the moon landing.
My buddy and I were helping his dad put in a bathroom in his old house. While tearing out a wall I found a stack of newspapers that must have been stuffed in the wall as insulation. They ranged from 1937 to 1943. The best one that I kept was the headline that the Lexington had sunk at Coral Sea.
Yeah, it was great. I remember articles on local men being sent off to the War, a successful raid on a Japanese aircraft factory by B-29s (Despite bad weather conditions, I might add! [:D]), and how the advancing Soviet Army freed a whole lot of American POWs in German prision camps. Oh, and how could I forget? An ad trying to sell a Studibaker! [(-D] It’s one thing to read about history, but another entirely to actually touch something from it. Amazing…
Oh, yes, and I was confused by the headline, too! Thanks for clearing that up for me! It’s good to know that Mr. and Mrs. Jones now have a prize Iwo Jima airfield!
But could you imagine that, though? A middle age couple stading in the middle of all that chaos, saying, “I love the location! And the view of the ocean? Breathtaking! The neighbors are a little loud, though…” [:D]
(Seriously, though, I have the highest respect for those Marines. I know I couldn’t have done that.)
Again, in seriousness. The battle for Iwo Jima was one hell of a thing. It’s interesting that there was no delay between the invasion and the story in the newspaper. The news reels at the time were often months behind the actual event, but the papers, as today are just one day behind.
My father has some papers from the War. He has the Attack on Pearl harbor, VE day, VJ day and so on. Really neat to read those old papers, so different back then.

It’s amazing to find stuff like that - to actually read an article about an event that was written as it happened - not out of a history book.
That is really fortunate. Go to a scrapbook supply shop and get one of those archive bags for it. They’re supposed to keep newspapers safe. If they don’t carry them ask them who does. I’ve got the newspapers from when Kennedy was shot stored that away.
Always neat to be able to touch history like that. I’ve had similar experiences helping tear down the old theater on Biggs Field after it had been condemned. Old coins under the stage dating from the 19teens, papers in the walls, etc. made you feel like you’d travelled back in time a bit and also a little sad to be participating in tearing it down to make way for something else.
