Well I’ve done it. I bought a vacuformed kit. A nice 1/72 Savoia Marchetti SM-82. Needless to say I was quite overwhelmed once I opened the sturdy little box and discovered all the tedious work ahead of me. I probably should have started with a more simple kit but this is a beautiful plane and subject over medium got me. If anyone has some suggestions for starting out with this type of kit or any leads to references I’d sure appreciate it.
Hey Mike what brand kit is it? A good place to start for tips and inspiration is Swanny’s site. Make sure you check out his FW-200. It’s an awesome example of the art of vacs. My tip to you would be to start with a simple kit and learn the ropes. I’m building the simple but very nice little Su-9 from MPM. I’ve been building vacs for many years and after you get the base skills down they aren’t as intimadating as most people think they are.
Thanks Woody. Aviation Usk Nebraska is the mfg. All I’ve done so far is try to figure out the steps to take, the cuts to make and what’s good and what’s not. There are some injection molded parts, PE and some resin. All of it needs alot of clean up and I’ll have to do alot of scratch building but it will be something good to keep me busy during drying time on “quick” kits.
