USS Nimitz deployment

Sadly, the USS Nimitz, CVAN-68 has set sail on her final deployment cruise.

Sad to see her go. 50 years is a long time to be in service.
Nimitz is to be replaced by the GERALD FORD class carrier USS John F. Kennedy.

Thanks WhatIfRebel! I’ve been interested in carriers ever since the 70’s when my oldest brother served abroad the USS America, CVA-66. I guess I’ve better get out my Trumpeter 1/500 USS Nimitz and get started on that kit.

End of an era for sure. Has anyone heard of any plans to keep her intact as a museum, tourist attraction, etc?

I got to tour the Midway in San Diego many years ago and the Intrepid is on my bucket list. The Nimitz would be a great addition to the historical fleet. Maybe in Pearl Harbour.

I sure hope that they keep her as a museum. My bucket list of visits are the USS Constitution, the Charles W. Morgan, & the HMS Victory.

You would have thought they would have saved Enterprise as the first nuclear powered carrier and make her a museum. Unfortunately, and i do hope i am wrong with regards to the Nimitz class, they have to dismantle large sections of the ship in order to deactivate and defuel the reactors. So if its the same with the Nimitz then I dont think they will save her.

Better and more probable, depending on her condition, is moth balling her and putting her into reserve.
