USS Nautilus (PICS !!!!!!!!!)

Hi all !!!

I’m building Lindberg’s 1/300 scale Nautilus, and i painted the hull flat black. Is this wrong??/ Most of the pics that i have found are black and white.

Any help would be appreciated…

thanks
[:D]

Flat black is fine. Thats what she is painted as a museum ship right now, and pretty much how she went through life. You might want to paint the bottom half of the hull anti-fouling red, that seems to be the current scheme for the modern day nuke, but thats entirely up to you.

thanks bud…

what about the periscopes and antennas, flat black also???

i usually do cars…lol

American submarines have fairings on thier masts that are painted light gray with random black splotches. Check out www.ussnautilus.org as this is the official museum sight and you will be able to see what I’m talking about. (Take the virtual tour) This is an absolutely fantastic place to visit in person. P.S. In the pictures of Nautilus as she is now, you may see a series of panels running down both sides of the ship. This was not part of the Nautilus during her service life. Also check out www.navsource.org. Go to submarines and find SSN 571 Naultius. There are some good shots here too.

ok, i’mjust about done with sub sub… one problemthough, i put the decals on, and shot a coat of flat clear on it… now the decals have a white haze on them… any ideas??? can i make this go away???

Better go to the decaling forums, littlemoe, I haven’t put decals on for almost 20 years. I’m afraid I can only help you with the submarine.

What you’ve got is called silvering…

Decals require a smooth surface in order to adhere…you put the dullcote on first, which (under a microscope) creates a rough surface. The rough surface causes a diffused refraction of the light, which reduces reflection. The smoother the surface, the greater the reflection (glossiness).

The silver haze is actually an air pocket between the surface of the paint and the decal.

First thing to do, is get a new x-acto blade and make some surgical style cuts, just enough to cut through the decal film. Then coat the decal with a water and white glue mixture, and let it dry. The water will carry under the decal, the shite glue is left when the water evaporates. White gllue dries clear, and eventually fills the air pocket between the decal and surface. You may have to do this a few times. Once dry, you can clean up the surface of the decal with some warm water and a cotton swab.

Once dried, apply some Micro-set or Micro-Sol decal setting solution to the decal. This will soften the decal film and cause it to settle into any depressions under the decal. Once that’s dry, apply a coat of dull-cote over the top to seal everything in.

It make take a few applications of decal solution and water and white glue to get the silvering to disappear. Best advice for the future…is FUTURE.

I build a model, and regardless of what it is, give it a coat of Future Floor wax after its painted. This gives the model a glossy surface that allows me to add decals, washes, and weathering to the model. Since Future (called Kleer in Canada) is acrylic, you don’t want to put Dullcote or any enamel based clear coat over the top of it…bad things happen.

I use Tamiya X-21 Flat base mixed with Future as my Dullcote…and it works very well. If I overspray and it runs, I wash that are down with warm water and a cotton swab and respray.

Let me know if you need any additional help.

HI !!!

Here are some pics of the completed sub!!!

Enjoy!!!

please, tell me what you think??!!

Is that one of them new-fangled torpedoes? Oh wait its a sub! LOL

Nice build Ron, looks like a good desktop display piece there…so your wife gonna let ya put it on top of the TV?

yea right!!! only if was made by Precious Moments!!!

thanks chris!!!

Hey Ron dont feel bad…my wife wouldnt let me display my stuff on top of the tv either…but guess where the #3 Dale Earnhardt car is sitting? YOU GOT IT…on the TV

LOL chris, all you need to do now, is build a jimmy spencer car, and put it next to her car, and eventualy, the spencer carwill push hers off the TV!!!

And of course the Jimmy Spencer car will blame it in Kurt Busch as usual.

LOL tim, you got that right!!!

littlemoe that is one slick sub, great job.

I showed wife this thread and she suggested you paint a “precious moments” type smile on it. then she has to let you keep it on the TV.

HEY, thats not a bad idea!!!

Anyone know how accurate the old Monogram offering of this sub is?

Do you mean Aurora? Maybe it was reissued by Monogram, like many Aurora kits were. I have 2 or 3 Aurora kits still kicking around somewhere.

Great Nautilus, Ron!
