The USS MIDWAY has arrived in San Diego to begin her next tour as a museum. She’s currently moored at NAS North Island to load aircraft and then she’ll be moved over to Navy Pier in Downtown San Diego. She’ll be open to the public in Spring 2004. MIDWAY will be the largest aircraft carrier museum in the US to date.
For all former MIDWAY Sailors out there (my Dad was one '81-'83), MIDWAY Magic will continue on for future generations.

Midway will be a tribute to all carrier navy, no matter what ship they served on. The two I sailed on, Shangri-La (CVA-38) and Hancock (CVA-19) were processed by the Taiwanese steel mills and were turned into Daewoo’s and oil tankers.
One excellent feature of the new Naval Aviation Museum, San Diego, is that it will have restored aircraft from the ages that Midway was active (1945-1992.[4:-)]

We use to joke that the Midway was on loan to the Phillipean Navy because it spent so much time in Subic.
I’m glad to hear that this ship is getting a well deserved tribute! I can’t wait to see what her next tour (pun intended) will be like!
Hehehe, even if the midway was on loan to the Philippine Navy, we wouldn’t have much in the way of aircraft to put on it! [:p]
MIDWAY has left NAS North Island and is in her final berthing…across the San Diego Bay at Navy Pier. She’s next to the STAR of INDIA. Currently MIDWAY has an A-7, an A-6, and and E-2 Hawkeye on board. More A/C to follow.
My dad was on Midway literally for her final cruise(right after Gulf War I), he was a B/N for an A-6E in VA-115.
It’s cool to hear that she won’t end up in the scrap heap!
Hopefully, I’ll still be able to buy her when I’m a billionaire…
