USS Constellation

It’s not the greatest, but it was fun to build. [;)] It’s made from the Polar Lights kit.

Brian

Great looking USS Constellation! That Doomsday Machine is hard on starships. By the way welcome to the forum.

Very nice…it gets Grandpa’s seal of approval. Great build from one of TOS best episodes.

Yes, nice work. And yes, Grandpa, definately one of the best episodes. Now, how 'bout a nice Doomsday Machine in scale!![:D]

I like the “damaged” effect, especially the engine’s. Good work and [#welcome] to the forum.

looking good for a Yorktown Class starship so how did you do the damage effect.
(BTW the Constellation is a Yorktown Class Heavy Cruiser easily mistaken for a Constitution Class Heavy Cruiser.)

Thanks for the kind words and warm welcome!

This was part of a group build over at the PCModeler website. I kept a pretty good record of how I made this with pictures, and discriptions as I went .

Here’s the link if you’re interested:

There’s more in my photo album (click the “web site” link at the bottom of this post.)

The final weathering is alot darker than I wanted, but an improvement from what it was. Like I said, it was fun and I learned a few things along the way.

I originally wanted to make a wall mounted display using the mouth of a 5 gal bucket, covered in sculpting mesh and paper mache’, with a lit up center using x-mas lights and some transluscent colored pastic film or gels, but…I had a heck of a time with the kit. [:)]

Thanks Grandpa! The Doomsday Machine was always my favorite episode since I was a kid.

Thanks again for the nice reception!

Brian

You sell yourself short! Awesome build! A great tribute to her.
Lee

Nice job. Did you ever get those close up shots of the damaged nacells?

I’d like em!
Lee

Thanks Midnight & starmanmm

There are close up pictures?!? Wow…All I had to go by was the usual screen grabs from the DVD that are floating around the net. I would be interested in the close up if you have a copy.

If so please e-mail it to me!

Thanks again,

Brian

Nice job, Brian! My all-time favorite episode as well, followed closely by “The Ultimate Computer.”

Thanks Paul!

My second favorite episode is the one with the AirForce jet that sees the Enterprise in a very low orbit. It was on this past weekend.

Something about seeing the Enterprise in the sky makes that one stand out.

well the Star Trek Episode Nomad is on right now.

I like it!!

“Scotty…give me that power!!”

cheers

MikeJ

I like it Brian! [:)] Very realistic, thanks!

Frank

the Doomsday Machine episode of Star Trek is on right now and looking at the closeup pic they have. you have the nacel ends wrong the right nacel should be damaged right up to the pylon and the left sould have more structure forward (remains of Bussard scoop more likely) refer to the Picture that Midnight prowler has in his post to see what I mean.

Hi Mike,

The reference pictures of the 1017 I had weren’t too great, so I’m sure I got alot wrong. I was basicly trying for “close” as opposed to a full on prop replica. The kit I used (PL 1/1000th kit)is actually too accurate to make an accurate 1017 replica because the screen used model was an inaccurate (AMT) kit . So being a more accurate kit in fact makes it less accurate off the bat. (wow)
I tried for an updated version. Kind of a “Constellation 2004” thing. I didn’t paint it white,or mess with the b/c deck but went for a greyish tone like the Enterprise, and I added the rust ring & some grid lines as seen on the Smithsonian Enterprise pictures on the IDIC page. It’s more of a Constellation/Enterprise hybrid [:D]

Here are the ref pictures I had to go by:

Here are a few other pictures at different angles while it was under construction:

and 1 more of the finished model from a different angle showing the nacelle damage close to the pylon:

The fine bits are hard to see in the reference pictures, and I toyed with the idea of adding some more detail up front on the nacelles, mainly of some damaged fan blades and ruptured tanks and such, but never got around to it.

I still have a few more PL kits, so maybe I will do another in the future [8D]

actually you are right that they used a not so accurate Enterprise kit as the screen model of the Constellation but you got to wonder why a Yorktown class vessel is exactly the same as a Constitution class vessel and the saucer damage is dead on but I cant figure out why the right side warp pylon is skewed down on the screen model while the left pylon is straight on and its nothing you did but if you look at the Re-fit Enterprise the pylons are completely staight (wierd man!) oh and by the way I have the reissued TOS Enterprise.

Brian, for what it’s worth, I think it’s perfect the way it is. We all tend to see things differently and modeling is one of the arts. So I like your starship! Of course now I’m comparing your skill to mine and mine is found wanting!! Great job!
