I’m beginning to build a 1:82 plank on frame USS Consitution. I’ve done the deck, and all the other set up stuff for the side planking.
Here’s my question:
Do any of you know where I can get info on the colors of the actual ship? Every model I can find that is a clear picture is left in the “natural wood” finish. I want to model my ship very realistic…in order to do that, I need some sort of guide for colors?
Any plans, pictures etc? I looked the ship up on the web, but I can’t get a really good pic of the deck, and some of the other details.
I appreciate anything anyone’s got!

When building wood ship models the usual modelers like to show off the wood grain and such. However, the link below will bring you to the actual site. Move the mouse pointer to different areas on the drawing and by clicking it you will be brought to a color photo of the real ship. If you put the mouse on the steps, you will be brought to a lower ot upper deck. Take a look for your self.

Some of the photo’s do not do 100% justice to the real ship. Example the photo of the gun carr. show a red shade but the correct was red brown. I have about 125 photos of the ship covering everything. I can make you a set ( you pay developemnt and shipping) I visited the ship in Sept 2002.
The biggest differance in the model was the the inside bulwakrs are MED GREEN, not white as most state.

What period of the ship’s life does your model represent? Colors schemes changed over the ship’s 200 yr history.
Go to www.seaways.com and do a search of their archives. Someone (forget the name right now) posted the results of his primary cource research, and had a good summary of the different color schemes that the ship wore. Example: From launching until about 1811, she did not have a white stripe-- it was ochre in color. HTH,
