USMC Recon Hummer

Here are some pics of a recent build of mine. Saw some pictures in a book of this USMC Hummer outfitted with a Bushmaster mounted on the weapons ring. Used the Italeri Tow kit and modified the weapons ring slightly. Added a Verlinden PE detail set with the correct tires. Also used Verlinden’s modern radio set and added all of the applicable cabling. The back end was stuffed full of stowage from various kits and some resin castings I did. I also scratchbuilt the brush guard on the front bumper.

Nice. Good job on the “chocolate chip” camo!

Very very nice [:)]

excellent job but of course i have a soft spot for hummers because that is what i used in the Army.

the only thing that i see and i bet it is molded that way is the 40mm rounds going to the Mk. 19 should have a sag in them going down into the ammo can .

i am not trying to be nit picky because i really do think you did an excellent job

Looks good. Good job on the weathering and paint job. The tires could use some dust and weathering on the treads. They look too clean. The scratch-built parts look great.

I’m assuming it is from ODS era, '90-'91 timeframe, or earlier. Chocolate Chip DCUs were phased out shortly after ODS and the newer 3-color DCUs were used. Also, the weapon up top is not a Bushmaster. It is a Mk19 40mm automatic grenade launcher. A Bushmaster is an M242 25mm auto-cannon (the same as on a Bradley or LAV-25). It was mounted on a HMMWV as an experimental vehicle and was not put into production. Tamiya did a kit of it a long time ago. The Verlinden “Modern” radio set isn’t modern any longer either. It is from the late '80s. The current radio set, since the mid '90s, is the SINCGARS, available from both Pro Art and Real Model. The radio that comes in most HMMWV and M113 kits, the AN/VRC-160, is more current than the Verlinden AN/VRC-46.

Good job overall. Keep up the good work.

Real nice!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it is always appreciated. The model was built up from some ODS photos I had. It was hard trying to decide how to replicate the dusty tires. Some photos showed them really dirty, while others showed them somewhat clean. I couldn’t see much dust and dirt in the treads in my pics, so went with what I had. Next time I’ll add more. Thanks for the update info Gino, I’ll keep that in mind for my HEMTT. That armored HEMTT with the Mk19 in Prime Portal is my next project.

Hey, HA, I’ve seen some pictures of a Bushmaster mounted on top of a HMMWV; looks like a lot of hardware sitting on top of a Humvee. I’m assuming it degraded the Humvee’s performance somewhat due to the extra 500 lbs.+ mounted on top (not including ammo), though that’s an awful lot of firepower for a vehicle that size. I understand that, with the right ammo, it could even take on an MBT.

The main issue was with the recoil. A standard HMMWV wasn’t strong enough to take the shock and abuse to the frame and suspension. The frame and other components failed and cracked. It was also not accepted since the US Military was not looking for a heavily armed truck, but a troop carrier and general utility vehicle to replace the M151A2 MUTT. It could have been beefed up and had the frame strengthened to make it work. It also wouldn’t have been too survivable. I know I wouldn’t want to take on a T-72 or BMP in a HMMWV.
