Using Woodland Scenics liquid latex

I have a few questions on Woodland Scenics liquid latex.

What is the best technique for using it?

Are there any ‘gotchas’ I should be aware of?

How long should I leave it between coats?

I have’t used Woodland Scenics latex before, but have used a couple of other brands and they all seem to work about the same way. I only use them on parts that have one surface flat, so that I can glue/attach them to a flat piece of styrene (wheel halves, radios etc, even an occasional engine part), once the glue has dried I brush on a mold release (Pam works well, as does baby oil). Just a thin coat is all that is necessary. Then I brush on a coat of latex and let it set for an hour or two (it goes on white but as it dries it turns to a brownish yellow). Then I brush on a second coat and let it dry as before. Then I cover the latex w/a layer of cheesecloth, followed by two or three coats of latex. Then another layer of cheesecloth followed by at least 2 more coats of latex after which I let everything dry for a minimum of 24 hrs. Then I peel the resulting mold very gently off and wash it with warm soapy water (to remove the mold release agent.

You can dispense with the cheese cloth but it’s been my experience that the mold will soon tear if you don’t add it. Also, check your local hardware or auto supply store for some acid brushes - they’re cheap and disposable (you won’t be able to get the latex out of a paint brush before it dries). Store the molds in a dark cool place. You’ll need to do some experimenting as to what works best for you, but a thickness of about 1/8" seems to work best for me.

Hope this helps a little
