Using putty.

Hi all-

I was wondering what techniques you all use for using putty on aviation models. Since getting back into modelling after ~15 years I had never used it before. Now I think that it is the cat’s [censored], if only I can get it to work right. The only application tool that I have is Squadron’s Precision Putty applicator. Now that I think about it, it probably isn’t the best tool for general putty use. I have ordered a general putty applicator from Squadron so that might help.

So, for the experts here. How do you apply it? And is there anything special that you do when sanding?

thanks!

I’m not an expert but I learned some good stuff at the Swanny’s Models website in the tips section. He has a whole chapter on seam repair.

Excellent site. Thanks!

I use an artist’s spatula that I picked up a Michaels to apply putty. The blade is about 1/4" wide and about 1 1/2" long. Bigger than I wanted but the smallest they had. It’s smooth enough and flexible enough that it will push the putty down in places like pin marks and leave it relatively smooth.
