Using EZ Vinyl Masks for Canopies

I am building Revell Monogram’s 1/48 B17 Flying Fortress. I am new to using the masks for painting canopies and other clear parts, but I wne ahead and ordered EZ’s sheet for the B17. What a shock to find so many almost microscopic pieces of vinyl!! Are there any tried and true, or just suggested, methods of working with the masks? On the ball turret for example, it almost seems an impossible task to successfully apply the masks. Sure could use some help!!

First Welcome to the Forum[#welcome]. Masking & painting clear parts on AC is one of the reasons there are Armor modelers[:D]. Only advice is to take it slow, follow the directions, make sure each mask is burnished down at the edges, and sooner or later you’ll be ready to paint. Using the EZ masks is probably easier than using tape or Bare Metal foil, and will give better results than hand painting with a brush.

welcome navy1996!![:)]

First of all [#welcome] to the forums navy1996!!! And I will have to say [#ditto] to what rjkplasticmod just said.

Welcome to the forum. I just used the black magic vinyl masks for a f-105 revell and took the advice of the knowlegeable people on this forum-----use a drop or 2 of soap mixed with water. Dip the mask in this solution then apply. It worked great for me. Good Luck.

f-4phantom,
Please explain. What mixture of soap to water? Waht does this do for you? I’m also a first time vinyl mask user.

Use 2 drops of any liquid soap to a cup of water. Peel off the vinyl mask, dip it in the water and place it in position on the canopy. You will be able to move the vinyl for a perfect fit. As the water dries-blowing on it helps- the vinyl will stick on the canopy. With patience it will work.

Thanks! Do you get any paint bleed-under when doing this?

As long as you burnish the edges down you should be ok.

navy1996,

Welcome - I can feel for you[:(] When I built the B17 I had the same problem but did a freehand paint job very carefully and it came out fair[:)] Next time though, I’ll use masks and follow the good avice of those ahead of me[#ditto][#ditto][#ditto]
