I have been looking through some of my old magazines and I came across a description of using epoxy to sculpt tarps, rags, ect. I’m wondering if anyone has had success with this method and if it is something worth trying? Specific types of epoxy? In the magazine the modeler used Aves Apoxie but does it matter what brand? How easy and the limits to using it?
never tried it but i hear miliput is good for it. i have however tried making tarps with paper towel or tissue soaked in diluted white glue. the advantage of this is you can drape it over things while it cures, it is light, wont shatter, and looks quite real. you can also use foil. all this relies on your artistic skills to make it look good. i have none so mine ended in the bin and i bought some ready made resin ones

I used Milliput for sculpting - it’s a good stuff. Made a figure torso out of it, from scratch:
As for tarps, I developed a special material I call Pawelite - you can make some glueing a layer of aluminum foil betwen two layers of thin tisue. Here’s how it looks painted:

hm…I keep Tamiya 2-part epoxy putty in my workshop, it comes in handy fairly often sculpting wise. Would not be my first choice for a tarp tho…and I like Talentless’ tissue paper idea, I’ll have to try that someday. Like a stick-and-tissue plane. You have to dilute the glue with water yes. I’ve heard for some the mix also involves rubbing alcohol but I’m not sure…

Thanks a lot. I used Scotch/3m spray glue - it says “77” on the can. Stays nice, rubbery elastic after it dries. Good luck with your projects!

all good suggestions that you! I love that tarp idea they look awesome…Im looking more for like rolled up tarps and bags for stowage that I can put on my military vehicles so I don’t have to keep spending money on kits and I can just make my own
Valuegear (and other companies ie verlinden) do resin tents and tarps sets plus other storage options. I used the valuegear stuff on my AS90 and they looked good. You could just use the tissue soaked in watered down white glue and fold or roll it up and make your own and make straps or rope ties out of tamiya tape or cotton.
In the process of trying out both your ideas talentless with the soaked paper towel…I also tried it with a tissue just to see if it was any different…looks good so far just waiting for it to dry!

I have quit using plastic or resin rolls some time ago - those made out of tissue not only are dramatically cheaper, but also fit better on the model and look better, too. So I hope you can start making your own tarps soon, good luck with it and have a nice day

I have used the white glue and tissue technique for both rolled and draped tarps. Yes, thin the glue with water, something like one to two parts water and one part white glue.
