I decanted some krylon gloss black like on Swannys page. The method works very well and application by airbrush is very easy and control is great. However my gloss basecoat isnt anywhere near as glossy as I expected and is fairly grainy. What has caused this? Humidity or temp? What can be done to remedy what I’ve already done and what can prevent this in the future?
Thanks for any and all information you can provide!
Dave, i use some decanted Krylon primers and they all will get grainy very quickly. i wouldn’t be using them if i couldn’t wet sand them back smooth. i mostly use Krylon Brown primer for seam repair and such. i’ve even tried Krylon Gloss Black for the base primer for alclad paints and i had the same result no matter what psi i used, or distance from the model. my advice would be try and sand it down with some 400 to 600 grit to smooth it out, then reshoot.
but, if you really want my true advice, i’d strip the primer off with Castrol Super clean or Oven Cleaner, chunk the can of Krylon Gloss Black as far as you can chunk it, and go puchase Alclad Gloss Black Base!! its certainly money well spent, it goes on like a dream!! its very delicate, but it will give an amazingly glossy finish perfect for the application of alclad metalizers. good luck. later.
I shot some Krylon per swanny’s instruction and np… but then both swanny and I use Badgers… hmmm
