A friend of mine has decided to go career in the coast guard and i would like to get her something to commemorate her dedication but all i can find are search and rescue C-130’s and helicopters. does anyone know of any kits of coast guard cutters?
I just found this out from EdGrune, Jag Collective makes a couple resin kitsof Coast Guard subjects. They can be found at http://www.jagcollective.com/Ships_catalog.htm. I think most Coast Guard kits are produced by the smaller manufacturers, and mostly in resin. I’m hard pressed to think of any major producer that has released one recently.
In addition to the JAG kits (1:700 scale), Iron Shipwright makes a 1:350 High Endurance Cutter as the USCGC Hamilton. http://www.commanderseries.com/ships_350.html I’m working on it (part time – pictures later) They also make several WWII era Coast Guard craft.
I’m also working on master of a 1:192 scale White class 133’ USCG Buoy Tender. I’ve offered it to ISW to produce. Its just about ready to go. Pictures later today also – hope to finish it soon.
that 1/350th scale hamilton looks like it might work, supposedly its the same length and class of ship she was on when she did he boat time. whew just a little on the pricey side tho
JAG offers a 1/700 USCG Hamilton for $42. I think it’s about 7 inches long.
Unfortunately, there is not a lot of new stuff out there for USCG subjects. The exception would be some of the nice resin kits that others have already mentioned.
I haven’t updated my kit list in about a year, but it is still pretty complete…
the 1/700 is a little small the 1/350 seems like it might work tho

There are several companies that make fiberglass hulls and resin fittings for various USCG cutters and boats. Lots of scratchbuilding is required.
Wooden USCG boat kits available: Dumas Products has the 44 foot Motor Lifeboat, 41 foot and 40 foot Utility boats; Midwest sells the 47 foot Motor Lifeboat.
Fiberglass hulls and plans are available from:
Scale Shipyard in 1:96 scale: Polar class icebreaker (50" long); Hamilton class 378’ WHEC (47"); Bear class 270’ WMEC (33"); Cherokee class 205’ WMEC (ex USN ATF) (26"). SSY also has the 205’ WMEC in 1:48 scale (51").
Micro Glass has the following in 1:32 scale: 95’ Patrol Boat; 82’ Patrol Boat; 47’ Motor Lifeboat; 44’ Motor Lifeboat; 40’ Utility Boat; 25’ Motor Surfboat (lifeboat for WMEC/WHEC). They also produce the 44’ MLB in 1:16 scale.
Coast Guard Models has several cutter and boat hulls available in several different scales.
Why in the world you would get your ex-girlfriend something when I am the one that puts up with your butt is beyond me. [sigh]
I do believe this is a great thread for me to stay out of.
I do believe I want the heck out of this thread too, but at least if im looking at the computer I cant see that she is still giving me “that look”
If I were you, I’d build a Pink Chevelle instead of a USCG chopper…
That look may be so cold, you may need to build an icebreaker.[:-^]
I dont even know why he even asked you guys this question when he knows darn well that thing would not make it through the front door of our home! [}:)]
who would have thought that she would use the search feature to figure out everything I have ever posted in…whew mark that one in the “guess what I learned today” book
Even if I had not searched I would have known exactly what was up when you brought that thing into the house! [#wstupid]
