I’m planning a WWII N.Africa airfield diorama and from actual pictures I’ve seen there are a lot of fuel/oil drums usually sitting around the planes. They appear heavily weathered, but the question I have is - what are the base colors? OD, black? Or were they different colors based on content, i.e. fuel, oil, water, etc.? Thanks for any help!
Wow no posts I guess no one here has seen a 55 gal drum before
I think you would be safe with OD green but fade it a little and weather it very well (rust, dents, pings the works)
Good luck
I would use OD green with yellow lettering and probably use some black ones also as they could be ones left behind by the British, French, Italians, and Germans. Look at reference photos of the Afrika Korps, Italians and British forces as we probably took over the same airfields that they had used. Ask around in the Armor forum for info, such as for refueling areas.
Some drums were “dark green” like Tamiya XF-61.
I appreciate the responses! They are very helpful. Interesting thought about the use of captured airfields, which certainly was the case, especially in Tunisia.
Thanks again for the help.
