us wwII railroad guns

with all the hoopla about the two german railroad gun kits released last year. what did the us use in ww2 after the d-day invasion? did they have thier on are did they use captured railguns. i have never seen any kits for us guns but just german.

I think the allies were more scrappy and were more apt to run up and kick the Germans in the shin rather than bang away at them from afar… Seriously I have no idea…[:D]

Ga. I think the allies depended more on air power and fast manuvering, rail guns don’ t really fit those stratagies.

The US did use two 14 inch railway guns as coast artillery at Ft MacArthur in
San Pedro, California during WWII.

I may be right out to lunch on this one … but … didn’t the U.S. leave all the rail guns at home during W.W.II.

The Allies had something better than the Railguns in Normandy. they had the Royal Navy and there 6 inch and 4 inch guns http://www.iwm.org.uk/belfast/history7.htm

I’m reading a book at the moment (Panzer battles of the Waffen SS) that has about 10 Panthers moving across a field and suddenly 6 of the get taken out by what the Panther commanders realize to be the Battleships in the English channel

I think Robert is correct, the U.S. left their rail guns in the states on costal defense duty.

Don’t forget the US Navy! Despite fighting a huge sea war on the other side of the planet, we simultaneously provided roughly 50% of the warships that gave support to the D-Day invasions, including 3 of 6 battleships.

Did the Americans somehow get some French railroad guns in World War One? I have a model of the French St. Chamond Railway Gun (in 1/35th), and it strikes me in my (largely vain) attempts to research the thing that we got a bunch of French guns and brought them back to the US.

Railroad guns were a pretty German phenomenon for work other than coastal defense, though. Odd and rather interesting. They were of course useful now and then, but they could be quite vulnerable as well, and limited by the need to travel on rail lines.

I think robert is correct that they probably left their guns in the states. Image lugging those things around

Not exactly sure, but were any railguns used on Corregidor?

yeah your right Larry
heres the rundown of the invasion force 3 Royal Navy Battleships and 3 USN Battleships

the ship i was looking at was the cruiser HMS belfast one of 17 RN cruisers there, 3 USN, 2 Free French and 1 Allied (might have been a HMAS?)
better fire power than a couple of trains[:)]

Don’t forget it wasnt only the USN fighting a huge sea war on the other side of the planet![4:-)]

I know you only asked about the US rail guns but heres a link to some of the other allies’ rail guns in the WW2 http://www.southernrailwayuk.com/railguns.html[oX)]
