I’m about to work on a WWII diorama based in a european city (not sure of exact location yet). My dio is going to include a Willy MB Jeep and a tank. I’m wanting to include a tank that really defined the US forces in WWII but I don’t want to do a Sherman as I’ve just done one. What other tanks would you say defined the war on the US side ? And that being said, who makes the best kit of those tanks ?
i would think the M24 Chaffe and M26 Pershing took US armor desing in a totally new direction, particularly in suspension, but it WAS the M4 that carried the US thoughout the war due largely to its ease of mass pruduction
Hey Adam,
If you don’t want another Sherman then your pretty much limited to what warmonger suggested, Matbe an M-5 but the Stuarts didn’t really define much, they
were available and (like the Sherman) reliable. If I was doing it I would use an M-24,
Your Willys jeep defined moderen combat, Just make it the cener piece!!!
Good Hunting,
G.W.
Adam - you kind of eliminated the obvious choice here … as far as a U.S. tank that defined the war, there really was only the Sherman. All others were mere contributers.
[#ditto]The Sherman was THE tank. If you are looking for an interesting build, go with a tank destroyer, or a Stuart or maybe an M8 howitzer motor carriage…
how about the british “achilles” version of the m10 tank destroyer? the introduction of the brits’ more powerful anti-tank gun defined this destroyer in the same way that the up-gunned firefly ‘defined’ the sherman.
now please don’t hit me for saying anything against the beloved sherman[:0][B)], but until it got its new gun, it lacked effectiveness against a lot of german armour unless employed in overwhelming numbers (which it usually was, i know, but that’s not the point i’m making…).
just my view from this side of the pond…
regards,
nick
Do a Pershing if a Sherman is out of the question. Tamiya’s kit is really nice, and frankly that’s about the second best tank to define US forces in ETO.
The Sherman was not the strongest Boomer on the block, but it won the Armour war of WWII. It usually took 3 to 4 M4s to hunt and kill a single King Tiger, but the smashed M4s couold usually be rebuilt and back in the field in as little as 1 and as meny as 3 days. So many companies made parts for them, there was no lack of parts. They were used by the Americans, Canadian and the British. Looking for a new one to build Convert an American M4 to a British M4 FIREFLY. Its an M$ with a bigger gun to deal with German Armour.
That’s one of the more unpleasant jobs recovering smashed tanks. There is no way to get rid of the smell of human remains, and the new crew would also know that some previous crew had been blow apart in a recovered tank.
If you want the tank that defined U S Forces you would be limited to the Sherman. The only good thing about it though was that it was mass produced. Other than that I feel that it was a BIG piece of junk. Very poor design. Go with the first real American tank of WWII. The Pershing!
