US Marking Stencils

I had this in paint’n’stuff, but maybe more people have had this problem here in armor.

I’m trying out using stencils to do markings, so far no good. The paint keeps sneaking out under then stencil. I’m trying my butt off to not put alot of paint on. The stencil seems pretty flat. Does anyone have any tips for using stencils?

I made a stencil for my German flag out of bristle board - hard, but thin paper that we in Canada use for projects. The best thing to do with the paint is AB it, I do that and it seems to work fine.

Good luck!

most of those thin stencils are for airbrushing, so by you saying you’re using alot of paint seems to tell me the problem! stencils are used by people to make more realistic markings instead of decals by painting them on, however, by adding TOO MUCH paint you will only make a build up line along the edges of the paint, thus defeating the process. Mask the area around the stencil, with painters tape, it’s blue and wont leave a residue on the model. and airbrush it in a thin coat, making another pass if necessary. It shouldn’t be though after you’ve weathered them along with the tank, they should look great. Too much paint is the problem with the bleed through too!

I was not very clear in what I said. I meant that I not using much paint at all. sorry. It would seem that I would be better of spraying these.

Edit: I did cut a tiny brush flat so it would be a stencil brush.

There is no way to stop the paint from seaping through when brushing, the only hope it tape, pressed tightly down to the model, paint, allow to full dry, them remove the tape.

it is the brush touching the stencil that is ruining it-- the paint must be sprayed![:D]- treadwell

I switched to Acrylics so I can clean the seapage “easily.” I’m just gonna have to make do with what I’ve got going on right now. I’m doing this as I type.

Why don’t you use the decals with micro sol and set?

Just trying something new.

Didn’t turn out that bad at all. It’s got some light roughness around the edges, but there’s a nice star. I do think that I’ll be spraying the numbers.[:)]

I did one more star with the lightest coats possible. It was on a convex surface so it was pretty tuff. Only one corner is a little muddled.

dude-- post some pics i wanna see-- i tried very hard to do ‘balkenkruz’ on my 1/16 tiger-- couldn’t get it to where i was happy–ended up with archer dry transfers-which i think are absolutely awsome— treadwell

yes let’s see some pictures mate!

The reason you’re getting bleed through with a brush is due to the capillary action of the paint. This is the same process why we use liquid cement. As previously said, stencils are meant for airbrushing. Good luck w/the numbers (and put away that paintbrush!) LOL

Ok. Here is the star I just did. The camera was free with my wifes PC so it sucks, sorry it’s kinda blurry. There’s no way I can brush the #'s… no way!

Looks great!

There’s a lot left to do, but it’s a start. I was thinking about making some sandbags for the glacius. The weathering still needs done, as well as some detail painting. This project is really a set of experiments. It’s Tamiya’s M5A1, the only thing that didn’t come with the kit will be acsrys and tracks. The tracks will be Acads M3 Honey vinyls.

lookin great-- nice job man—treadwell[:D]

Thanks guys. This is the first mostly complete thing I’ve posted up.[:)]

it’s good to see pics, make it easier to see where you are comming from with your problems!!! Looks good so far man, git 'er done!
