Wow! I’ve always wanted to build a U-boat! How do you paint the rust? dry brushing, maybe? This is the one in 1/72, right?

The rust is done by using a micro powder for weathering…thinned down with rubbing alcohol then applied with a small brush just where I want it.
This is my first Sub kit and I’m having lotz of fun!..except for too small of box and bad planning on the small parts with too heavy of trees holding them…it’s a great kit!
Yep! it’s 1/72 scale.

Hey Papa-Echo The U-Boat is really starting to take shape, looking good. Two questions though, 1 How did you remove the lower hull? 2 How did you measure for the cut? Thanks
I was afraid someone might ask that question…
Well I first looked at some pics of these in the water and then… Not being very savey with ships and subs and because of the complex shape and sides it was not easy to just measure down and mark the waterline at the deck level …so… I filled the bathtub just enough so that the subs keel touched the bottom and that the waterline was right were I wanted it to look in my water scene…asking my lovely assistant ( my wife ) to hold the sub at the right angle…I marked along the sub were the water level was, then later I taped along the sides just about 1/4 inch below where I marked the water level…( to make up for mounting and the water ‘stuff’ )
AND THEN!!!
It was DREMEL TIME!!! [:-,]
I used a couple thin dremel cut off wheels and WENT TO TOWN!!!..boy what a mess! I had lotz of FUN!!!
BUT!..I kinda goofed…somehow I got fixed on a mellow water scene…without giving much thought to how I want my ship to look in the waves and not leaving alot of room for having the nose up or a good tilt to one side…[:(]
So I’m probably going to put the very rear portion of the deck just a hair below the water and the nose as high as I can and cut a bit more off one side to give her some tilt.
…and yes we had our clothes on! …You should be ashamed of your selves!! [:p]

papa-echo, it’s your fault I went and bought this model, like I need ANOTHER model in my house. My wife is gonna divorce me for sure but I hope she leaves me the model room:-)

Congrats! how wuz your kit?..all parts ok?..watch out for the smaller parts!..if they are not already broken…they will break cutting them from the trees…in sum cases I used a fine dremel to cut away the part from the tree (at the tree)…and then cut closer with my fine hobby side cutters. Revell of Germany used a very hard and brittle styrene for this kit (which is not bad) its just that the Trees them selves are too heavy around the smaller parts…NO GIVE or FLEX!
It’s also funny how so much care and detail went into outside the tower and decks but when it came to the ‘GUNS’ they seemed to have rushed it…I have seen some of Revell OG 1/48 Aircraft kits and they are (in some cases) better if not equal to Tamiya or MRC kits! Their 1/48 JU-52 Troop and Zival plane is OUTSTANDING!! in quality and detail!!..RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!!
I can understand them wanting to keep the VIIC cost down…Lord knows at 49.00 to 59.00 bucks that is amazing for a Import kit at that scale and size indeed!!
