Update from the Duke's Aircraft Modelworks

Well, it’s been awhile, but I finally got some things done on my latest aircraft projects. At least some things done enough to take pics and post.

Some of you may not know, but when I started my Hasegawa RF-4 Phantom for the “From Axis to Allies” Group Build on the LEM, I had to strip off the paint. The Easy-Off knockoff spray I used badly affected the plastic as well:

After copious amounts of Mr. Surfacer 500 and elbow grease, I managed to get this model back on track. My RF-4 Phantom II is finally at the decals stage. Thanks to FightinJoe, here it is sporting it’s new white coat:

I am so glad I finally am able to get some progress done on this. I’ll be adding a clearcoat to protect the white and then I’m going to decal it and then seal them. After that, I’ll be adding all the landing gear, landing gear doors and all other accessories to finish it off. Whew!

Well, since I had the white paint out, I figured I’d better go ahead and paint my Tu-16 Badger underside as well. Here it is with all the white sprayed over it:

Well, that summarizes all the work I’ve been doing the last few days. Amazingly enough, much of this was done while my wife was on her vacation from work for five days!

Thanks all for looking, comments are welcome.

Nice save Mark! But before you do the painting, you may want to fill that gap on the wing leading edge where it meets the fuselage…

Are you gonna bring the Badger to the next meeting to show your progress?

Thanks Carlos. It doesn’t show very well, but I did fill that little gap already. Yeah, I had noticed it awhile ago myself and took care of it soon. Decals should be soon.

As for the Badger, I may (knock on wood) have it finished by the next meeting. It depends on how much work I get between now and then.

Nice recovery work on the Phabulous Phantom recce bird.

Darwin, O.F. [alien]

Looking good so far Duke. Nice recovery on the Phantom. I’ve never had that reaction using Easy Off.

Regards, Rick

Thanks Darwin, I appreciate it.

Thanks Rick. I think the reaction occurred because this was a knockoff/ generic brand of Easy Off and also possibly because I left it on the model for two days. I’d left Easy Off on a model for up to three days before without this issue, but this time using the genenric brand, it flaked like this.

Thanks again all for the compliments

Have you ever tried Polly Scale ELO (easy lift off) that stuff is not so harsh and usually gives good results.

To be honest, no. I’ve never been able to find it. I have heard about it though. Does it also work on Testor’s enamels and Kustom Kolors?

Wow, Mark!!

That looked like it was stripped with gasoline, dude, and what a miraculous recovery you made!! That would make for an interesting article in the Magazine!

Outstanding save!! [tup]

Frank

Mark I bought my bottle over at Brookhurst. I think I have seen it over at Military Hobbies as well. It does work good on Testors enamels. I have never used any Kuston Kolor paints so I cant rate it there. But in peronal experience it removes apint as well as teh easy off oven cleaner without the same smell or caustic feel on your hands…

Thanks Frank! It’s great to see you again oldhooker! If I can get them to accept it, I’d sure be willing to have it published. Just about everyone I know said that they would have chucked it into the trash, but I hate trashing a model.

Is that you surrounded by all those rugrats? Wow! Cool pic I must say!

Carlos, thanks for the heads up. I’ll go looking for it the next time I’m in either shop. Hopefully though I won’t have to strip another model for awhile though!

Nice getting to talk to you again too, Mark! Life’s been kinda like a whirlwind the last couple years trying to get a new enterprise off the ground, but it’s nice to finally be able to relax again and participate in the forum. [:)]

Yes, that’s me surrounded by my Grandchildren! Not very often I get them all together in one place, as my kids have grown up and spread out now.

If I was you, I’d write Aaron Skinner and see if he’d think the F-4 recovery would be a good article? In this crazy economy, being able to resurrect one from the dead like that would definately come in handy!

Take care man, [:)]

Frank

That sounds like a plan Frank. I will.

I know what it’s like trying to get all the grandkids together at once. I have no grandkids, but I have 21 nieces and nephews that I almost never see. I would love to have them altogether more often.

I’ll contact Aaron and refer him to this Thread and see what he says. Thanks for the idea.
