I am going to add those two figures from Verlinden to my Tamiya STuG III Ausf B. It was posted in Armor few days ago in case you haven’t seen it… /forums/t/129514.aspx
I don’t have much knowledge on StuG crew uniforms so I did some research on the internet last night and I learned a great deal… I assumed they wore black uniforms like Panzer crews did but I was dead wrong! During the Operation Barbarossa, the crew wore field grey uniforms just like the infantry wore. But with dark green collars and shoulder pads along with red pipings. Here’s the best picture in color I found… is it accurate enough for me to go ahead?
The correct uniform for your Barbarossa StuG III crew is simply a field gray version of the black Panzer uniform. The dark green collar in the illustration was indeed correct for the initial issue of these uniforms but was limited to a few StuG units during the French Campaign. Red piping on the shoulder straps was correct but by Barbarossa, the strap itself could be dark or field gray that was to replace it.
The headgear was usually the M38 field cap or the standard helmet.
Thanks Ron V… you have been a big help! Found a good website earlier showing all uniforms and your description fits the uniform listed on the website perfectly as there was no dark green collars as it must have been worn during early stage of WW2. The website didn’t allow me to copy the picture of the uniforms so you can click on the link below and look at the top row and far right.
Andy~ WoW-- Advice from Ron Volstad! How awsome–and lucky for you. Did you get his number? I can’t think how many times it would be nice to have him around for questions[:D]
(Ron thanks for posting–like to see more of you around here !)
Andy~ Good luck with your crew-and lets see some W.I.P. Buddy-
Holy cow! [:|] I didn’t realize it was him earlier… that explains why his answer was spot on. Thank you Ron Volstad! [Y] His name did ring the bell but I couldn’t place it. He’s one of the reasons why I have been a big fan of DML products because I save the box artworks.
Indy, thanks for taking your time! I have started painting the figures just the uniforms using MM enamel and it made me realize I wish I used acrylic earlier but it is still in its early stage of painting. But I am planning to use acrylic for the flesh as usual. I am afraid it will be a very slow WIP because I am taking my family to Denmark and Sweden in few days so things have been hectic. Will post pictures over the weekend… have a good one! [:D]
Ron’s right, the “bottle green” collars were gone by then, as they were on the rest of the Heer Uniforms as the M40 uniform was issued, although the M36 uniorms were still seen here & there as they were generaly replaced as they wore out… The Tamiya Field Gray is the best match for Heer Feldgrau I’ve ever run across…
Thanks Hans! I have started a new post as WIP for my figures to go with the Sd.Kfz 234/1 and StuG III B… feel free to look if you are interested as you know I could use your help…
