Don-Have you flown lately? If you’re a drinker, airport lounges card EVERYONE-it’s kind of flattering 'tho. But you make a good point; don’t shoot the messenger-clerks are just covering their bottoms.
Don,
A 16 year old can purchase a shotgun in Arizona, California, Illinois, and Washington (I know there are more states than that, especially down south) as well as ammunition. For a rifle, 18 years old; for a pistol, 21 years old. There is a background check done and a 10 day waiting period (CA) for shotguns and rifles, and 30 day waiting period for pistols.

Want to hear something that really doesn’t make any sense…pocket knives, nail clippers, and lighters are banned from being carried on board aircraft (per TSA regulations) but knitting needles (both wood and metal) are! Someone explain that one to me.
How about the fact that you can buy nail clippers etc during the inflight duty free shop!
man, i can almost foresee the day when scale modeling will be outlawed due to that we use sidecutter and Xacto knife plus harmful lacquer based flammable paints…
Seems to be Wal-Marts policy. Me being over 18 (im 20) find it ridiculus to have to have a manager come over and card me and scrutinize everything before they will ring it up. Screw them and go to the hobby shop and you’ll ghet your paint no questions asked.
things just seem to go in cycles
back about 35 yrs ago i (we ) used to go through the same thing with glue
then testors came out with this non-toxic lemon smelling glue
non toxic and non stick[(-D]
HOLY S$$T you need to be 18 to buy one crummy bottle of paint?![:O] Where I live in Canada they couldn’t less if you were an 8 year old buy that sort of stuff what the he!! has the world come to. And the paint was acrylic to boot[xx(]
folks i hate to say anything good about walmart but they are acting logical. they are protecting their butts by carding for underage consumers. the law states they must card for those who appear under the age of 18. that is what they have to do. lawmakers passed the laws due to the increased use of paints to get intoxicated. problem being they slapped all paint products in the same batch. as for alcohol if you appear under the age of 35 you by law must be carded. it is politics that allow guns and ammo to be purchased by those under the age of 18.

Hey Joe,
It’s ALL politics! The right to bear arms is actually a good bit of politics as it allows people to demonstrate responsibility, while the law IDing people who buy paint and alcohol is an intrusive law that undermines people’s accountability. Have any of the anti-drug or intoxication laws actually worked? Are less people getting intoxicated?
I’ve always found it strange that you can buy beer at the Texaco or Safeway in the US, but have to be 21, while in Canada you can buy alcohol at 19 (18 in Alberta and Quebec!) but usually have to buy the booze at a government liqour store. I finally figured it out, though. The US thinks you’re not responsible until you are 21, though my personal opinion is closer to 30 ([:-^]), so as a responsible person you can easily access alcohol. In Canada they say your old enough to drink (big difference between that and being responsible) but you’re not responsible enough to buy alcohol from anyone else but Big Brother. I wonder which is better? There are about the same percentage of alcoholics in both countries…
that’s bull$#!t. with trash laws like this im going to do my best to do something harmful with those paints!!! (jeez just kidding) I’m in NY which is the WORST state. (17 to drive!!!) My LHS guys ask no questions when i try to buy paint but if they did id throw the paint at their wall…
and get arrested for disorderly conduct? [;)]
This is an interesting Topic…Over here in Australia or at least here in Brisbane you have to be 18 to by a can of spraypaint, this is to stop the teenagers from inhaling and getting high on fumes and also an attemp to minimise the amount of graffiti thats all to common these days, But i think that model paints and glues are available to all ages…
as far as gun laws go they are very strick, after 30 odd people were gunned down in Port Arthur all semi automatic rifles and shotguns were banned totally, even pump actions are banned…To own a single shot bolt or lever action you must be licensed and prove ownership of an approved gun safe…Pistols are even more srtict, you have to be a member of a gun club (which you have to attend at least once a month), have an approved gun safe and the weapon is only to be transported in a portable lockable case to and from your gun club, You have to apply for a gun license at any police station where they check all your background information…the whole process usually takes about 3 months…
Needless to say that IMHO a pshyco with a scoped up hunting rifle can do just as much damage as a pshyco shooting an assault rifle from the hip…
It just goes to show how much freedom is being taking away from all of us.I remember as a kid I could buy anything that I needed for bluiding a model without the ues of an I.D.
