Fairey Gannet…ugliest…plane…EVER!
Dare I say it?..Um…OK… P-47 Thunderbolt.
I know there are alot of Thunderbolt fans out there.[:-^]
Hi Tom,
Thanks for the compliment on the Cobra. It is Monogram’s 1/48th AH-1S Cobra, mid 80’s vintage. By far the best quarter scale Cobra kit in existance. The snake motif/markings come from Isradecal’s 2003 IDF/AF Attack Helicopters set. For the whole story, see here;

Got to see an A-10 do its thing over Lake Michigan last year at the National Cherry Festival, it was like watching an aerial ballet. Before that, the last opportunity I’d had to see that graceful plane fly like that was when I was 11 years old. While not all out ugly, the OV-1 Mohawk is a bit on the homely side. Still a cool plane though. [8D]
Cheers,
Albert [:o)]
Well I could not pass this up.1The Short s-19 Singapore III
2 The Handley Page h.p.52 Hereford, they should have called it the hefer. It looks like a fiying cow.
3.The Armstrong Whitworth a.w.38 Whitley
I have to hand it to the Brits on making some of the ugliest planes that flew.Sometimes I think when it came to aerodynimics the Brits throught that book out the window and said to themseleves,“just take this part here and add it to that there. We will add a motor here and find someone dumb,oh I mean brave enought to fly this plane.” I imagin a lot of pilots that flew these ugly birds where great at night landings,so no one could see them and they would not die of emberissment flying them in daylight.Digger
Nimrod… Even the name is goofy.
How about the “Flying Boxcar,” C-119 in the Canadian Air Force. I did several trips as a Com Tech in them during the early 60’s and the aircraft was quite old at that time.
… Now the kicker. I’m looking for a C-119 kit.
…Can anyone recommend which is the best C-119 to buy and build. My skill level is 6.5 out of 10.
Bill.
Testor’s/Italeri made a 1/72 C-119 in the 80s, and it comes and goes in and out of production, so you should be able to find it. It’s not a bad kit, I hear, and I wouldn’t mind doing it myself as a lark. I actually got to fly in one, one time. It was owned by a guy who had two of them he used for smuggling electronic appliances into Mexico (the taxes and tariffs on such imports put the simplest, cheapest VCR out of the range of everyone but the wealthiest ten percent of the population). I remember that ancient bird being the shakiest ride I ever took, and that means shakier than a real old B model Huey and a Convair T-29 making its last flight before going to the boneyard. Old timers who used to fly them, and paratroopers who jumped from them, say the Boxcar shook violently even when fresh from the factory. But, the AF got more than its money’s worth out of that old bird. And, being a Fairchild product, it was tough as last week’s pot roast. (What is it about Long Island-built airplanes? They are the toughest a/c in the world (or, rather, they WERE). We’re talking about Fairchild, Republic, and the famous Grumman Iron Works all located roughly within twenty or thirty miles of each other on Long Island.
Tom
BTW, if we can count one-off a/c, how about that C-47 with the F-104 nose bolted to it for radar testing. These few a/c flew for a number of years.
P-47…UGLY! The most beautiful plane ever made and you thinkits ugly shame on you, may your feldgrau turn to dunkelgrau in the jar.
Sharkskin,
“But, can someone help me remember the name of that hideous ag plane (is it Australian, or do they just use it a lot down there?). It looks every bit like a crazed bullfrog with wings. It’s also used as a flying ambulance for people living in remote areas.”
While I’m googling up the name for you I’ll let you in on a secret…having lived in the remotest areas of Australia for 37 years, and travelling by air around 3000km per week for the last 18 yrs…I’m yet to see one in the flesh, only in the movies!

How about the Vickers biplane transports? (the name Virginia springs to mind). Or the Wildebeast?? Or the Brewster Buffalo? The Boeing Stratocruiser wasn’t exactly an outstanding beauty either! Or how about the Saunders Roe Princess flying boats?? And what about the sole CA-14/14A Boomerang prototype? They really screwed the looks of that one! The list is endless!
I will have to go with blackwolf3945. Gadzooks where did that come from?
the SR-71 isn’t the greatest looking bird. the harrier is ugly too, third would be the Gotha HO Flying wing thing.
I’d like to change my vote.

A nice build, but man dj… that an ugly plane.[:D]
I can’t believe this. Most of my favorite planes have been mentioned. The B-52, B-36, F-4, SR-71, A-10, B-1 and I hope that I misread the B-24. Sure they are each unique designs. With the exception of SR-71, the only people that I could think of that would have a reason to think these planes are ugly are the ones that would be looking up at them. [xx(] [:D]
The nut that said in-line Italian fighters were ugly is oo his rocket.
#1 has got to be the Blohm and Voss BV-141
yea, I gotta say that F-32 is fugly
I ot a book lying arounf on the world’s worst aircraft here, lets see what else I can come up with.
anyone see a picture of those hybrid cars with wings?? those are ugly

the abrams explorer

the tarrant tabor

the capronisimo - that thing is just wrong!!! it would look nice if you took the wings off (all 3 sets)

no way this bird could be called pretty!!! (interesting maybe)

me-321/323

the xp-77 has got a few wierd things about it

ok, I’ll quit now
Chance Vought V-173 (XF5U-1) Flying Pancake. So ugly that I had to buy the Sword 1/48th kit of it.
Supermarine Walrus. A short while ago I spoke to a bloke who flew them on ASR missions in WW2 and amongst other stories was the tale of a USAAF crew who were reluctant to get out of their nice safe dingy into this thing.
As for the Lightning, It’s not an aircraft, it’s a SAM.
